The Mitchell Report: A Closer Look at Donovan Mitchell

Prospect: Donovan Mitchell

Position: Combination Guard

School: Canterbury

AAU Program: The City

Class: 2015

Overview:

During the first Providence College Elite Camp last summer, one of the most impressive players attending was an unknown guard from New York named Donovan Mitchell. In fact, our Kevin Farrahar referred to Donovan as the top player in the field on that day.

Mitchell returned to the PC Elite Camp this past weekend and once again showed why he is one of the most highly regarded guards in the 2015 class. Both Kevin and myself came away very impressed, even though this was his first action in a long time coming off of a wrist injury. He played on the same team as Kaleb Joseph, Pascal Chukwu, Abdul Malik Abu, and Jared Terrell (coached by Ed Cooley) and more than held his own.

Mitchell is a big time athlete with a powerful build who had a nice handle. His outside shot showed some rust after the long lay-off, but he is going to be one of the top prospects in the country for the 2015 class. Right now he is still underrated after missing so much of the Summer AAU season with a broken wrist. This will change as he returns to action.

What Others Are Saying:

ESPN says that Mitchell “is a power guard who truly attacks the rim at every opportunity. His size and strength is beyond his years and so he’s able to both initiate, and absorb, contact on his way to the rim. He has other tools in his driving arsenal and makes good uses of jump-stops and euro-steps. He follows his own misses around the rim, handles it well enough to lead the break, and is also a pretty good passer off the dribble.”

RIVALS notes that “Mitchell is doing a good job of getting to the basket, passing, and using his athleticism to his advantage. The question most coaches have is which position he will be.”

NERR  said this after the Pittsburgh Jamfest this past April: “This weekend, Donovan showed why he is one of the top young prospects in New England, leading The City to a run into the Final Four of the Pittsburgh Jam Fest. The six-foot-four swingman drew a long list of coaches every time he took the court this weekend including the likes of Kansas, St. John’s, and many others.”

The Competition:

Providence was one of the very first high major programs to offer Mitchell. Ed Cooley has often said that it is important to get in early with a recruit and establish a long relationship with him, and the Friars are doing just that with Mitchell. Other schools involved with Mitchell include UConn, Boston College, Iowa, Maryland, and Iona.

Bottom Line:

Donovan Mitchell is going to be one of Ed Cooley’s major recruiting targets for the 2015 class. At the Elite Camp last week when it came to add a fifth player to start with 2014 Super Recruits Joseph, Abu, Terrell, and Chukwu Ed chose Donovan, and he fit in seamlessly. Mitchell has been the talk of the past two PC camps and he should continue to garner major attention from the Friars throughout the recruiting process.

As for Donovan himself, he seemed to have a blast at the Elite Camp and came back the next day to attend the Magic Johnson Celebrity Basketball Game. Afterwards Donovan tweeted that it was an “amazing weekend.”
