Providence versus Pittsburgh in 7 Minutes

Three quick thoughts in re-watching Pittsburgh and Providence from Tuesday night:

1. Pitt’s Lamar Patterson is the type of wing the Friars haven’t had in quite some time.  He was not only efficient on his way to 17 points (7-10 shooting), but made key plays late in the shot clock.  In the game’s first eight minutes he swooped through the lane for a layup, scored off of an offensive rebound, picked a Vincent Council pass on the run and made a nifty pass in the lane for a pair of Pitt free throws.  He then made a pair of driving layups in the final 10 minutes when Providence was within two possessions.

2. Providence was twice in danger of falling out of this one.  Bryce Cotton caught fire late in the second half with PC trailing by 12 to keep them in it.  He made four jump shots in the final three minutes of the first half (two 3 pointers) to bring Providence to within a much more manageable seven at the break.

Later, PC trailed 40-32 with LaDontae Henton on the bench with three fouls, but Kadeem Batts scored four of the Friars’ next five field goals to bring them to within four at 44-40.

3. Offensive rebounds hurt Providence late.  Down 44-40, PC got a stop, but Trey Zeigler grabbed a backdoor board and put it back in to push the advantage back to six.

90 seconds later PC again got the initial stop, this time a wild hook shot by Steven Adams that Talib Zanna grabbed on and got fouled on the put back.  He made 1-2 to make it 51-46 at the 8:14 mark.
