Picked up pieces in re-watching Wednesday night’s loss to Georgetown.

1. LaDontae Henton finished a scoop shot in which he was fouled with 4:28 to go in the first half.  The Friars wouldn’t score again until Henton was fouled on a backdoor lob at the 18:02 mark of the second.  By that point Providence trailed  41-19.

2. Speaking of backdoor cuts, Providence did a decent job of not getting beat backdoor except for one stretch in the first half.  Nate Lubick scored off of back to back cuts to push the Hoya lead to 26-16 with 7:45 left, and a minute and a half later Otto Porter caused Josh Fortune’s third foul catching a backdoor pass at the rim.

Georgetown only beat PC once off of a back cut in the second half.

3. Kadeem Batts was particularly strong in the second half and had a terrific sequence as the Friars streaked midway through the second.  He gathered a Henton miss under the basket and laid it back in to pull Providence to within eight at 48-40, and when Georgetown pushed the ball back in transition breaking the PC press Batts was already under the basket, there to draw a charge at the 12:14 mark.  Providence seemed very much in it at that point.

4. With the Friars struggling early Kris Dunn provided them with a spark off of the bench.  Georgetown went up 14-5 on a 12-2 run when Dunn drove, missed, grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back in.  On the ensuing possession he trapped hard on a double team along the baseline, coming up with a steal and kicking it ahead for a Friar layup.

He scored the next Friar field goal moments later when he went the length of the floor for a layup to make it 17-12.

5. The Providence press in the second half sped the game up, even if it didn’t result in many turnovers before the Hoyas crossed mid-court.  Georgetown’s first seven possessions after PC picked up full court:

  • A turnover in the halfcourt after Georgetown broke the press.  Vincent Council stripped a Hoya late in the shot clock
  • Georgetown got a layup attacking the press
  • A bad three by the Hoyas
  • A second straight possession resulting in a bad three point attempt
  • Porter missing a deep two
  • A steal as Georgetown crossed halfcourt
  • Porter with a deep 2

6. Offensive rebounds led to long Georgetown possessions late in the game.  Georgetown led by 13 when they regained possession with 6:06 to go and an offensive rebound allowed them to keep the ball until just over the 5 minute mark when Dunn came up with a steal and a layup.

Up 12 with 4:45 left, another offensive rebound led to another possession that burned another minute off of the clock.  A pair of Georgetown free throws with 3:48 on the clock pushed their advantage to 14.

PC ran off a 9-2 run over the next minute and a half, but they got no closer than seven.

And now, PC versus Georgetown in 7 Minutes.
