Looking Back at the 2016 Classic Between PC and Villanova
- Updated: January 24, 2020

Just about four years ago to the day, Providence and Villanova played a classic. The Friars were ranked #16 in the country, Nova #4. Villanova would go on to win that national championship two months later, but on this Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia the Friars got the better of them.
Ben Bentil was a force, finishing with 31 points and 13 rebounds in an 82-76 overtime victory. Kris Dunn had 14 assists and four steals before fouling out, while Providence got huge lifts from Junior Lomomba (12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) and Kyron Cartwright (all 13 of his points in the second half).
The loss snapped a number of streaks for Villanova. The Wildcats came in on a nine game winning streak, a 22 game winning streak in Big East play, and had won 32 consecutive games at home. The win improved Providence’s record to 17-3 on the season.
Villanova would lose just twice more the rest of the season.

Another big home game against a very good team. Let’s hope this team does not once again lay a dud at home in front of sell out crowd all hyped up. They definitely can beat Villanova. Big men need a good inside game and make their easy shots and about time we had a lights out shooting game from the rest of them.

What can I say, big men played well. Diallo a no show, duke bad shooting game plus another bad turnover with under two minutes to go. White fouled while shooting, misses both foul shots. Been going and watching pc since early 60’s and this is most frustrating team I can remember.
