Friar Starting Five: PC Over St. Peter’s, A Look Around the Big East
- Updated: November 17, 2019
Providence picked up a 68-47 win over St. Peter’s on Saturday afternoon. PC was led by David Duke’s 17 points, while Alpha Diallo was the other Friar to score in double figures with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Duke was in attack mode in this one, making eight of the nine free throws he attempted, while dishing out six assists in 34 minutes. Jimmy Nichols, Kalif Young, and Emmitt Holt all scored seven points in the win.
PC scored 29 points off of turnovers and led by as many as 26 at one point.
Here is today’s Starting Five:
1.Ed Cooley was happy with the win, but felt as though the energy in the building was lacking.
“I feel like we lost… I don’t feel the energy from our crowd…from even this room on a win…
It’s hard to win a college basketball game… Any time you can cross the line in success you should be the happiest people in the world,” Ed Cooley after PC’s win over St. Peter’s pic.twitter.com/n9OtDceuwS

2. Kevin McNamara writes on how this group is still figuring out its rotations. Providence was without AJ Reeves and Greg Gantt on Saturday, while Nate Watson remains out with no timetable set for his return. Reeves is suffering from back spasms, Gantt is home in North Carolina attending to a family issue, and while Andy Katz said earlier this season that the Friars were hopeful Watson could return by the Merrimack game (this Tuesday), he is still sidelined. There is no need to rush Watson back at this juncture.
Cooley still sorting through lineups, “You have to play the guys who are going to produce.” #pcbbhttps://t.co/iOqmwdoXVt

3. Brendan McGair has the full postgame press conference.
4. Mike Demars of Friars.com provided a video recap. Cooley explained how he will go about handling playing time for this group.

5. The shot of the day didn’t come from someone on scholarship, however.

Off the Bench:
Vermont knocked off St. John’s with a last second shot on Saturday. The conference went undefeated otherwise, with Villanova beating Ohio (78-54) after being blasted by Ohio State on Wednesday, DePaul improving to 5-0 with a beatdown of Cornell, Creighton edging out Louisiana Tech (82-72), and Butler rolling past Wofford (80-61). Xavier also snuck by Missouri State (59-56) on Friday.

THE WIN OVER ST PETERS means nothing. Beating cupcakes in Your own gym means nothing. Cooley wasn’t happy with the energy from the crowd , maybe PC fans are not happy with the lack of energy the team showed at Northwestern.

Don’t blame the crowd Ed. After getting whooped by northwestern what should have never happened the boys did not look that great against a much inferior team in St Peters. Sloppy play, poor shooting, and bad decisions by the better players didn’t give us much to cheer about.

We’ll have to see how the season plays out but DePaul, Xavier and Marquette are looking pretty good based on who they’ve played.

I’m more worried about Gantt returning home.
Sounds indefinite to me. Kid is a great talent. Can’t afford to lose him, can’t let that happen!!!
