Friar Basketball

Two Scheduling Notes and the Gator Challenge

David Duke vs. SJU

We are beginning to get more clarity on Providence’s 2019-20 schedule.

The school announced earlier this month that PC will play Florida at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn as part of a triple header on Dec. 17. The only downside? The 17th is a Tuesday.

The games are part of the inaugural Air Force Reserve Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational. Aside from PC and Florida, fans can also watch Temple vs. Miami, and Iona vs. Princeton.

Brooklyn is where Kris Dunn started his PC breakout with 15 points (6-8 shooting) and 13 assists in a convincing win over Miami during December of his junior year.

LaDonate Henton scored 25 points that night, while Carson Desrosiers blocked five shots.

Providence also played Kentucky in Brooklyn the year prior, falling to a Wildcat team featuring Julius Randle and Willie Cauley-Stein. Cauley-Stein dominated with 15 points and nine blocks in a 79-65 Kentucky victory.

Florida will be a stiff test for the Friars this season. The Gators just added perhaps the top immediately-eligible transfer in the country in big man Kerry Blackshear. The 6’10 Blackshear comes via Virginia Tech and considered Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas, in addition to Florida. He was a second team All ACC performer last year, and had 18 points and 16 rebounds in an upset of #1 Duke.

In addition to Blackshear, Florida added a pair of top 20 national recruits for next year, and a top 50 center. Rising freshman Scottie Lewis is expected to be a top 10 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, while their sophomore class was also loaded (it includes former Friar recruit Noah Locke — a sniper out of Maryland).

The Gators will likely be ranked in the top 10 come November.

The Friars will also take part in the Wooden Legacy over Thanksgiving weekend. Providence will play three games in Anaheim.

Here is the schedule (Pacific Time):
