Highlights: Luwane Pipkins’ 30 Points Against Providence

Luwane Pipkins Yelling

Providence fans have become very familiar with Luwane Pipkins over the past three seasons. Pipkins is a 5’9 graduate transfer who committed to Providence this spring after spending the previous four years at UMass. Eligible next season, he is expected to bring scoring pop and stability to a backcourt that couldn’t seem to find its footing for much of 2018-19.

Pipkins broke hearts across Friartown last December with a late drive and score to give Massachusetts an improbable win after Providence led by over 20 points earlier in the game.

The year prior, Pipkins scored 30 points in leading UMass to a win over PC in Amherst.

Pipkins was spectacular in that one, making 12-16 shots from the field and scoring 22 of his 30 points in an explosive first half.

For as well as Pipkins played two years ago, it was far from a flawless effort. Six of his seven turnovers came in the first half, turnovers that included throwing the ball out of bounds to no one in particular, being swallowed up by PC’s length in the paint, losing control of his dribble, and being stripped from behind in the backcourt.

Perhaps this is nitpicking a terrific offensive night, but in re-watching the game and pulling together highlights, I wanted to show both the strong aspects and struggles from what was ultimately a very good performance in December 2017.

Providence switched the 6’7 Jalen Lindsey onto Pipkins in the second half, and perhaps not coincidentally, Pipkins didn’t take a shot for the first nine minutes of the second half or score a field goal until there was 9:15 left in the second.

Yet, overall, Pipkins displayed just how dangerous he can be offensively in this one. He connected on 4-7 from deep, blew by defenders off of the dribble, and finished with tricky floaters in the paint. He made 8-9 shots from inside the 3-point arc.
