Reports: Ed Cooley to Meet with Michigan About Opening
- Updated: May 21, 2019
This spring just got a lot more interesting for Friar fans.
According to multiple reports, Ed Cooley is expected to interview for the head coaching position at Michigan. Former Michigan head man John Beilein was named coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers last week, leading to an opening at this late juncture.
Cooley, of course, has been at the heart of the Friar basketball revival. He took over a struggling program in 2011 and changed the culture both on and off the court. Three years into his tenure, Cooley won the school’s second ever Big East Tournament title, and has reached five NCAA Tournaments and two Big East title games.
The 2019-20 campaign is setting up to be an exciting one in Providence, despite the Friars stumbling to a 7-11 conference record this past season. Alpha Diallo should return for his senior season after being named 2nd Team All Big East as a junior, and center Nate Watson is one of the best interior scorers in the league. With increased development from sophomores-to-be AJ Reeves and David Duke, combined with the addition of graduate transfer guard Luwane Pipkins, Providence has a lot of answers on paper.
They will have even more questions to answer should Cooley depart.

Remember, Michigan search is being run by Gene DeFilippo (Now at Turnkey Sports) — who was the AD at Boston College when Ed Cooley was an assistant and the Eagles had it rolling. Cooley was at BC from 1997-2006 and DeFilippo was the AD from 1997-2012.
