PC Takes 2K Classic Title
- Updated: November 18, 2017
Despite Providence pulling out a 77-70 victory over Washington on Thursday night, few in Friartown felt great about how the Friars played in the semifinals of the 2K Classic.
It’s hard not to be encouraged on Friday evening.
Providence rolled past St. Louis, 90-63, to capture the 2K Classic Championship at Madison Square Garden behind a crisp offensive display and an improved defensive effort.
Talk about balance. No Friar took more than eight shots, and eight of Ed Cooley’s bunch scored seven points or more in the win.
The story of this game was the continued strong play of Providence’s bench, specifically its guards.
Freshman point guard Makai Ashton-Langford put on a show in the first half, scoring on a variety of difficult finishes in the paint when the game was still closely contested.

Ashton-Langford’s finishing ability stood out at the prep level, and he helped put the game out of reach by halftime after scoring on a finger roll, difficult floaters, and an athletic and-1. He finished with 11 points on 5-5 shooting from the field.
Maliek White knocked down all four of his shots from the field — each a jumper. The sophomore is playing with poise through four games, and his 11 points marked the second game this season in which he has scored in double figures. White went 3-3 from beyond the 3-point arc, and is now 5-8 from deep on the year. As encouraging as his hot shooting on Friday night was, he showed a different aspect against Washington, dishing out six assists in just 19 minutes.
Rodney Bullock found his stroke in MSG, following up Thursday night’s double double by leading the Friars once again with 15 points on 4-6 shooting (2-2 from 3). Kyron Cartwright had nine points, five rebounds, and four assists for PC.
Providence shot a ridiculous 90% from deep and made 19-24 at the free throw line.
With the victory, PC improves to 3-1 on the season. They return to Providence to take on a perennial NCAA Tournament in Belmont on Wednesday, before hosting Boston College a week from Saturday.
