Edwards Sparks Win Over Washington
- Updated: November 17, 2017
Welcome back, Drew Edwards.
In a game desperately lacking in composure from both of the teams taking to the Madison Square Garden floor on Thursday night, redshirt sophomore Drew Edwards provided just that in the second half of Providence’s 77-70 victory over Washington.
Edwards missed virtually all of last season recovering from an offseason knee surgery and looked out of rhythm early this year, but he was part of a lineup that included Maliek White, Alpha Diallo, Jalen Lindsey and Kalif Young that solved a 2-3 zone that puzzled PC most of the night.
Edwards scored 11 points off of the bench on 3-4 shooting from the field. His first basket came on a step through and-1 that pushed PC’s lead to seven with over 12 minutes to play, he buried a 3-pointer four minutes later, and knocked down another 3 with under seven minutes remaining to bump the Friar advantage to 12.

Edwards wasn’t alone in providing stability in what had been a shaky performance through 30 minutes. White and Diallo took turns setting each other up, as well as Young on the interior. White had five assists off of the bench, Diallo contributed four assists of his own, while Young scored 12 points on the night.
Friar head coach Ed Cooley went back to his veterans after Edwards’ final 3-pointer put PC ahead 68-56 with under seven minute remaining, but the offense stalled in the final five minutes.
Providence went over four minutes without a field goal, allowing Washington to pull to within a point with 2:30 on the clock. Freshman big man Nate Watson snapped the cold streak, scoring on half hook with just over two minutes to play to put PC up 71-68.
Watson’s basket was PC’s only field goal in the game’s final six minutes, but Washington couldn’t capitalize late. Kyron Cartwright and Rodney Bullock combined for six free throws in the final minute to close this one out.
Bullock finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Cartwright scored 10 of his own, but the game was won thanks to the strong stretch from the Edwards/White/Diallo/Lindsey/Young lineup that provided the cushion needed to survive the late game drought.
At this early stage of the season, Cooley will take the win and worry about style points later. Providence is now 2-1 on the season and takes on St. Louis in the final of the 2K Classic on Friday night.
St. Louis scored an upset of Virginia Tech in the opener of Thursday’s doubleheader.
