Providence Can’t Overcome UVA

The Friars fought, but came up short against #7 Virginia in the final of the Emerald City Classic, falling 63-52 on Saturday night.

Virginia star London Perrantes made all of the key plays — knocking down three 3 pointers, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out five assists while turning the ball over just once for a UVA group that shot 59% from the field.

This one appeared to be teetering toward a blowout at the halftime break, as Virginia led 34-20 and had both slowed Providence offensively and got seemingly anything they wanted on the other end — shooting nearly 70% from the floor.

The Friars opened the second half on a 9-0 run to cut UVA’s lead to five with 17:30 remaining.

Jalen Lindsey’s hot shooting kept Providence within arm’s reach for much of the second half. He connected on a 3 pointer with 11:35 left to cut Virginia’s lead to 41-36, and just over a minute later he hit a second 3 to bring PC within six.

Two minutes later Lindsey hit his third deep ball, this one cutting PC’s deficit to eight, but Virginia out-executed the Friars over the game’s final eight minutes to grab the title.

Lindsey led Providence with a season high 18 points on 6-11 shooting from the field (4-6 from 3), while Virginia native Rodney Bullock scored 16 points, but struggled through a 3-13 night.

The Friars didn’t get a point out of their bench.

With the loss Providence’s record drops to 4-2. They’ll return to the action on Nov. 30 when the University of New Hampshire travels to Providence.
