Frontcourt Transfers to Visit this Weekend

Andre Washington

Recruiting news is starting to come fast and furious in Friartown. After Michigan State transfer Marvin Clark Jr. and top 100 wing Alpha Diallo visited Providence last weekend the school is expecting a pair of big men transfers this weekend. Both will be eligible for the 2016-17 season.

Emmitt Holt spent a year at Indiana before being dismissed from the school in August 2015. In high school he was a finalist for Mr. Basketball in New York after a senior season in which he averaged 19.8 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 5 blocks for Webster Schroeder. His breakout came playing in the Nationals for Albany City Rocks on the AAU circuit when he averaged 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks in nine games.

During his freshman season at Indiana, Holt scored 15 points on 6-6 shooting against Pittsburgh, in just his third career game. He then saw sporadic minutes throughout the season before closing strong with a 12 rebound effort in the Big 10 conference tournament against Maryland.

The feeling in Indiana was that the 6’7 forward (with a 7’3 wingspan) was starting to put it together late in his freshman season. He finished the year shooting 65% from the field.

Holt committed to Indiana in the summer after his senior season. The Hoosiers were in the midst of a period of instability up front, as they had just seen Noah Vonleh head to the NBA Draft after one season and fellow big man Luke Fischer transferred to Marquette.

Holt was dismissed from Indiana after a pair of off-court incidents. He was cited for illegal possession of alcohol last August, just 10 months after hitting a teammate with his car with alcohol in his system. He was the third Indiana player dismissed from the school in a matter of months.

Following his dismissal he transferred to Indian Hills CC and played for Providence graduate (and one-time Keno Davis graduate assistant) Hank Plona. He averaged 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, shooting 69% from the floor.

Holt has two years of eligibility remaining.

Andre Washington has been a named floated around Providence for the past few weeks. The seven foot Wake Forest transfer asked to redshirt this past season to work on his game, and is eligible to play next season as a graduate transfer.

If his numbers at Wake are any indication, Washington would likely be brought in for depth purposes. He averaged under two points per game as a junior, but for a team in desperate need of frontcourt help the thought process in Providence could be that Washington would provide experience and depth while only filling a scholarship for one season.

The Friar staff has familiarity with Washington as well as assistant coach Jeff Battle formerly coached him at Wake Forest.
