Update on Dajour Dickens

Dickens rebound Hampton Daily Press

What a tease. Late Friday afternoon Matthew Hatfield of Virginia Preps and ESPN Radio tweeted that 6’11 2017 prospect Dajour Dickens committed to Providence.

Naturally, word spread quickly across the web of his commitment, yet within two hours of Hatfield’s tweet there were conflicting reports noting that Dickens had not committed to PC. Hatfield, a long-time respected recruiting voice in Virginia, deleted his tweet soon after.

Ed Cooley and Associate Head Coach Andre Lafleur were down in Virginia yesterday to see Dickens and top-ranked Bethel take on Menchville (a 67-45 Bethel victory in which Dickens scored nine points). The feeling around the program is that Providence is very well positioned to land the high-upside big man, who was in attendance last weekend for PC’s victory over Georgetown in a jam-packed Dunkin Donuts Center.

In December, Friarbasketball.com was the first to report of PC’s interest in Dickens.

Dickens began this season at the Miller School in Virginia, but returned to Bethel early this season. They started the the year 2-3, but are undefeated since Dickens transferred back.

According to verbalcommits.com, Dickens’ composite national ranking is 95th in the class of 2017. He’s considered a four star recruit by Rivals and ESPN and a three star on Scout.com. Rivals ranks him as the 12th rated center in his class, while ESPN has him 17th.

Dickens’ recruitment wasn’t the only story that came with a correction on Friday. Syracuse.com reported that 2016 Brewster Academy big man Taurean Thompson narrowed his list to four: Syracuse, Providence, Georgetown and Seton Hall.

Syracuse and the Hall have been pursuing him for months, he visited Georgetown recently, and he was at the Dunk in January. This story was quickly refuted by ESPN’s Adam Finkelstein, who reported that not only did Thompson not have a final four, but he also received an offer from Kansas this week.

Providence’s pursuit of Thompson has been helped by their rise up the rankings in December and January and the development of Ben Bentil this season.
