Dunn Wins It At the Buzzer

Dunn at the buzzer

Someone had to win this one, and on a night in which he was ineffective for the game’s first 30 minutes, Kris Dunn figured it might as well be his Friars.

Dunn rolled home a 17 foot fadeaway at the buzzer to lead Providence to a 50-48 victory at Creighton on a night when neither team could get out of its own way.

The Friars made just 29% of their shots, turned the ball over 15 times and surrendered 18 offensive rebounds, but limited a high scoring Creighton bunch to 25% shooting and 5-24 from 3 point range.

Drew Edwards provided a lift, converting a three point play in the first half when the Friars trailed by 12, and again in the second half to cut an eight point Creighton lead to five with 8:45 to play.

The closing seven minutes of the game belonged to Dunn, however. Providence’s star guard made just 1-9 from the field in the first half, and continued to struggle in the second, but got going off of a backdoor pass from Ben Bentil for a dunk to bring PC to within three at the 6:51 mark.

After Creighton’s Mo Watson converted a three point play to put the Blue Jays up by four with 5:30 to go, Dunn countered with a 3 pointer five seconds later to make it 41-40.

Providence tied in on their next possession when Dunn found Bentil for a 3 pointer, then Dunn drew a foul 25 feet from the basket and made both free throws to give PC their first lead of the game.

After Creighton pulled to within a point, Dunn drew the defense and found Bentil for a dunk to make it 48-45 Providence with 1:47 remaining.

Watson stripped Dunn and converted a layup with 11 seconds left in the game, setting up the game winner.

Dunn and Bentil were the only Friars to score in double figures. Dunn finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Bentil had 13 points and eight rebounds.

With the win Providence improves to 15-2 on the season.
