Marquette Upsets PC
- Updated: January 6, 2016
Just as the temperatures in Rhode Island became frigid, so did the Friars on this evening. An unenergetic first-half and a late game collapse led to PC’s first loss in over a month. Ben Bentil’s 22 second-half points went to waste as PC managed to give up a 7 point lead with 5:42 remaining and fall to Marquette 65-64.
Right from the get-go it was clear that this contest was going to be an ugly win at best for the Friars. By the completion of the first 20 minutes, Providence was just 1 of 10 from three-point land and faced a 6 point deficit heading into the locker room.
The second half was largely owned by Ben Bentil. Recording 22 of his 28 points in the half, Bentil nearly willed PC to a win but it just wasn’t enough. With 1:27 remaining on the clock, Ed Cooley’s squad held a three point lead following a made free throw by Rodney Bullock. That basket would be PC’s last.
Marquette converted on their next two possessions and gained the lead. A Duane Wilson layup left PC down 1 with 24 seconds left. Even after an Ed Cooley timeout, PC failed to get a shot off. Kris Dunn’s desperation shot at the buzzer was blocked by Marquette’s Henry Ellenson, leaving Friartown in shock.
The Golden Eagles were led in scoring by freshman guard Haanif Cheatham, who finished the game with 16 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the field. Duane Wilson though, was the hero for Steve Wojciechowski’s now 11-4 team.
For Providence, Kris Dunn came away with 20 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds but had 7 costly turnovers. Bullock struggled and scored just 8 points.
Next up for Providence will be a trip to Creighton University on January 12.
Note –
- Ryan Fazekas made his return tonight after missing the last 6 games due to a run in with Mononucleosis. The freshman appeared to have lost a lot of weight and as a result of his sickness only saw 5 minutes of play. In those 5 minutes he was 0-4 from the field.
