December Recruiting Update

Jordy

The buzz around Providence is palpable, as the Friars ran through their non-conference schedule at 12-1 and are currently 10th in the AP rankings. Meanwhile, the staff continues to search high and low for quality big men, and Friarbasketball.com has learned of two new names, and the reemergence of two the Friars were linked to previously.

PC is looking into the JUCO ranks at 6’11 riser Akil Douglas of San Jose City Akil DouglasCollege. Douglas’ stock is beginning to take off after a very strong start to this season, which includes games of 33 points and 14 rebounds and 28 and 14 soon after. Douglas is listed as a sophomore on the San Jose City roster.

The staff is hoping to schedule a January visit for 6’11 2017 center Dajour Dickens of the Miller School in Virginia. Dickens is in his first season at the Miller School after previously playing at Bethel High School in Virginia.

If Bethel sounds familiar, it should. It’s a Hampton, VA-area school that has long been a rival of Kecoughtan High, where Josh Fortune, Rodney Bullock and new Director of Player Development Ivan Thomas came from. Allen Iverson is a Bethel graduate.

Dickens is a Composite top 100 player with interest from a variety of schools, including Virginia Tech, Virginia, Creighton, Memphis, Temple, Clemson and, more recently, Maryland. Dickens was on Maryland’s campus for their Midnight Madness activities in October.

He’s a four star prospect per ESPN and plays for Boo Williams on the AAU circuit.

Here are two features on Dickens from the Hampton Daily Press and Scout.com, as well as a highlight reel from his sophomore year:

As for the familiar, PC is back recruiting 6’11 Canadian Jordy Tshimanga from the MacDuffie School. Tshimanga is a wide bodied left hander with a good touch around the basket. He recently played in a tournament on the campus of St. Andrew’s in Barrington where the staff took in a number of games. Pittsburgh offered him earlier this month.

The Friars are also getting back into the mix for Brewster power forward Taurean Thompson. Friarbasketball.com reported in the fall that PC was recruiting Thompson, but things had gone quiet on that front. Apparently, the Friars are ramping up their efforts there as well.

If there’s a theme here it’s size. Thompson is 6’9, 220; Tshimanga is 6’10, 250 and Dickens and Douglas are both listed at 6’11.
