Here and There in Friartown

News, notes, and opinions on Providence College basketball (and other topics) while waiting to see if PC finally gets another shot at the Arizona Wildcats in the Wooden Legacy Classic.

  • Kris Dunn is just playing at a different level than everyone else this year. He is out there playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.
  • Is there anyone out there hoping for a second round matchup against Arizona in the Wooden Legacy Classic more than God Shammgod?
  • After a rough first couple of days of the college basketball season the Big East Conference has bounced back nicely.
  • Memo to Friar fans: I don’t think Junior Lomomba is going anywhere at the end of this season and he will most likely be the captain of the 2016-2017 Friars.
  • Raise your hand if you had both the PC Men’s Basketball and Hockey teams being undefeated heading into Thanksgiving.
  • St Andrews in Barrington, RI is going to be the place to be for prep school basketball during the month of December. In addition to having their own budding superstar in class of 2017 small forward Aaron Wheeler, they will be hosting two major tournaments during the month. On December 4th through December 6th St Andrews will be hosting the Zero Gravity Prep Classic and two weeks later from December 18th to December 19th St. Andrew’s will be holding their annual Christmas tournament.
  • Some of the Friar recruits who will be participating in one or both of the tournaments at St. Andrew’s include Wheeler and Cole Swider (St. Andrews), Tomas Murphy (Northfield Mount Hermon), Wabissa Bede and Jarrod Simmons (Cushing Academy, Makai Ashton Langford is injured), Tremont Waters (South Kent), and A.J. Reeves (Brimmer & May) among others.
  • Can you imagine what last year’s Friar team would have looked like with Rodney Bullock starting at small forward? What could have been.
  • I wonder what is worse for an opposing point guard this year. Knowing that you will have to guard Kris Dunn or knowing that he will be guarding you?
  • If you get a chance you should arrive early to a PC game to watch Ryan Fazekas warm up. Many of his shots barely touch the net, let alone touching the rim. He has a classic outside shot.
  • Friar fans should be encouraged by the recent play of Jalen Lindsey. His outside shot may still be streaky but he is taking the ball to the hole with authority and is also becoming a really good defensive player.
  • Since when did it become mandatory for gatherings to serve turkey the week before Thanksgiving? Here it is the day before Thanksgiving and I am already sick of turkey. And I like turkey!
  • Bill Reynolds has a great column out on Ed Cooley in which Ed says that every day is Thnksgiving for him.
  • Don’t forget that the next Ed Cooley Radio Show will be broadcasting live next Thursday at 7:00 pm from Caserta’s Pizza in Federal Hill. I hope to see everyone there!
  • Kevin, Craig, and Craig want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving,
