Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

News, notes, and opinions on Friar basketball (and other topics) while enjoying this great Columbus Day afternoon.

  • Losing small forward Jalen Johnson to the University of Tennessee is not the worst thing in the world for the Friars. Sure he would be a great player to have, but PC already has three players at his position who will be back for multiple seasons.
  • Let’s see, Shamorie Ponds picks St. John’s over PC after overruling where his parents wanted him to go to school. Kevin Marfo selects George Washington because his parents wanted him to go there even though he was a heavy PC lean. Must be enjoyable making a living recruiting 17/18 year olds.
  • With the early signing period for high school basketball players still a month away the Big East is once again having another very solid recruiting year with seven ESPN Top 100 players already committed to Big East schools. Despite ESPN’s attempts to bury the Big East it remains one of the top basketball conferences in the country.
  • Providence College has been historically known as a school that has produced great guards. Kris Dunn is getting ready to add his name to this elite group of players. Here is my list of the five greatest guards in PC history (in chronological order): Lenny Wilkens, Jimmy Walker, Ernie Digregorio, Eric Murdock, and Kris Dunn. Who are your top five?
  • I wonder if Friar fans would still be worried about recruiting so much if Paschal Chukwu and Alex Owens were on the roster this year?
  • Anytime the PC hockey team can get a win and a tie on the road like they did against Miami of Ohio this past weekend I will take it.
  • Late Night Madness is great for the kids, but PC needs to have some sort of sneak peak of the basketball team on campus for the fans before the start of the season. Either an open practice or the return of the Mal Brown scrimmage game would do the trick.
  • Rumor has it that to keep in line with all the construction going on at PC this fall Friar Dom will be wearing a hard hat at PC games this year.
  • In case you missed it Kevin McNamara had a great article in Sunday’s Providence Journal on how the road to stardom was a difficult journey for Kris Dunn. Matt Norlander from CBS Sports also has a terrific article on why Kris Dunn passed on the NBA to return to Providence College.
