Paschal Chukwu to Syracuse
- Updated: June 28, 2015
According to multiple reports, Providence transfer Paschal Chukwu is headed to Syracuse.
Stacey Davis of NYCHoops.net was the first to report the story, which was later confirmed by CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.
Sources say 7-foot-2 Providence transfer Paschal Chukwu is Syracuse-bound #Cuse

BREAKING: Providence transfer Paschal Chukwu has committed to Syracuse, source told @CBSSports. Three years of eligibility remaining. #pcbb
— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) June 28, 2015
News of Chukwu’s transfer was a shock to many this spring, including PC head coach Ed Cooley whose Providence staff spotted and sought Chukwu before any other high major program. That he left Providence after just one season and is headed to long-time Big East, now ACC member Syracuse is a bitter pill to swallow for Friartown.
The 7’2 Chukwu could be a force in the middle of Syracuse’s 2-3 zone. He’ll have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules, but he will have three years of eligibility remaining.
With Chukwu in the fold Syracuse currently has no open scholarships for the class of 2016, as they lost three scholarships per year for the next four seasons due to multiple infractions over the last eight years. With a shortage of scholarships, the Orange were apparently very high on Chukwu to use one on a player who will sit out for a year.

This is completely driven by his family and advisors giving him bad advice. Why would anyone think Cooley could have done anything?Maybe they were afraid that Bentil was going to steal the spotlight after next year. The whole college basketball world would have been watching him this year with Dunn on the floor. Now do you know who will be watching him this year ? No one cause he has to sit out. Coach Cooley and PCBB do it right and will continue too. Cotten, Henton, Dunn and Bentil will show this and players will start transferring to PC not from PC. Ted Bancroft is what PCBB is all about integrity, hard work and family. Everyday is a great day to be a Friar !

Seems like a bad choice, seeing that Syracuse is under NCAA sanctions.

Syracuse is a program on the way down, especially with Boeheim set to retire in a few years. The Friars are a program on the way up with exciting new players on the horizon. We’ll give a Paschal a wave as we pass by him on our way up…

Yes this is a loss as the kid showed he has ability and a lot of potential. But again, it’s a kid, and college kids transfer schools after their freshmen year all the time.
And frankly, ‘Cuse is historically a better program than PC, so he went after what he perceived as a better situation. Who can honestly argue against that?
I really think some of the anger I see on here is unnecessary. I wish him the best, and will focus on those helping the Friar program go forward.

Wow. Bad decision. Cuse program has sanctions the rest of Chukwu’s career. Can’t quite figure out why he’s doing any of this, but he seems like a good kid – best of luck to him.
