Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key PC recruiting targets. Our staff will continue to provide reports on the top Friar targets throughout the year, and offer updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Tyrique Jones

Position: PF

School: Vermont Academy

AAU Program: Expressions Elite

Class: 2016

Overview:

Tyrique Jones is a 6’8 power forward who played last season for Vermont Academy in the prestigious NEPSAC prep school league against some of the top high school competition in the country. He is a defensive presence under the basket and a great rebounder in the paint. Offensively, he takes the ball strong to the cup and won’t be denied around the basket. Here is a highlight video showing Jones taking it strong to the hole:

Jones still needs to improve his outside shooting to be effective at the next level but he has plenty of time to improve this aspect of his game.

He had a very effective spring AAU season running with Expressions Elite on the EYBL circuit and averaged over seven points and seven rebounds per game.

What Others are Saying:

ESPN says that “Jones is a power player and good athlete who can be a “beast” in the paint. He is a high volume rebounder and equally good finisher in traffic who brings a rugged mentality with him to the court. He goes right into contact, can explode through it, and differentiates himself with his ability to clean the glass and provide a physical presence on both ends of the floor. He is also capable of running the floor well and has some good footwork and array of face-up moves when facing the basket from the mid-post.”

Scout says that “Jones is  slightly undersized at about 6-foot-7, but that doesn’t stop him from making plays. Jones has good explosion, blocks shots, rebounds, and has some solid footwork as well. Schools from the Big East, American, and ACC have been making him a priority for a little while now, and it is easy to see why.”

Rivals says that “Jones is strong, pretty athletic and he will go and rebound the basketball. Effort and rebounding generally translate pretty well to college. Throw in his size and you have a nice prospect.”

The Competition Besides the Friars, Jones is being heavily recruited by Kansas State, Connecticut, Boston College, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Xavier, and UMass. He should pick up even more offers during the AAU Live period in July.

The Bottom Line

Tyrique Jones is one of the top power forwards in New England currently ranked by the New England Recruiting Report as fifth best player in the class of 2016. He is exactly the type of New England player that PC needs to start bringing into the program in order to continue their success on a long term basis. Look for Ed Cooley and his staff to keep recruiting Jones hard during the July AAU season.
