Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key PC recruiting targets throughout the offseason. Our staff will continue to provide reports on the top Friar targets throughout the year, and provide updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Jordy Tshimanga

Position: C

School: The MacDuffie School

AAU Program: Houston Hoops

Class: 2016

Overview:

Jordy Tshimanga is a 6’11 260 pound wide-bodied center who is one of the most physical players in the class of 2016. He played this past season for the MacDuffie School, alongside top 20 2016 power forward Omari Spellman (Villanova), against some of the best competition in the country in the NEPSAC AA League.

The lefty is a rare commodity in today’s basketball in that he is a classic center who is a load in the paint who will not be pushed around. Tshimanga has a developing medium range jump shot and soft hands. Here is a mix-tape of Tshimanga in action:

First Hand Impressions:

Having seen Tshimanga in person on several occasions, and the first thing that strikes you is that he has the body of a high major low post player.  He physically looks like he could step right out on the court at a major college and not miss a beat. He moves well for his size and flashes a decent shooting touch. During one game I saw him make eight straight free throws in crunch time. Tshimanga was at last summer’s PC Elite camp and more than held his own going head to head against Friar commit Alex Owens.

Our Kevin Farrahar saw him go for 21 points and 12 rebounds against Hargrave Academy in November.

Tshimanga is a big guy and will have to continue to watch his weight. He is not overweight, but at 6’10 and 260-270 pounds with his body type weight will always be an issue. He also needs to improve his athletic ability and his motor. Like many big men his age, he sometimes just drifts when he is on the court, but he has a great touch near the rim and rarely brings the ball down near his waist.

What Others are Saying:

ESPN says that “Tsimanga is an absolute load in the paint. Not only is he immovable in the post but he also has terrific hands and very good natural touch. He isn’t a bad athlete for his size, has an instinctive understanding of how to use his wide lower body to clear out space inside, and will already seal and dunk in traffic. He sets massive screens on the perimeter and is a good pick and roll option because of his ability to come up with tough catches on the move. He can step out and shoot the ball to 12-15 feet and is an even more difficult match-up problem because he’s left handed. He’s a solid positional shot-blocker and rebounder but a constant space eater and physical deterrent for opposing dribble drivers.” ESPN currently has Tsimanga ranked as a four star player.

Scout says that “Tshimanga, who stands 6-foot-10 and weighs in at 245-pounds, is able to carve out space in the lane with his size and strength in his legs. Tshimanga rebounds his area well and was able to get a handful of put backs just from getting in great position for offensive rebounds. He also contested shots and played physical in the paint. He’s not a finished product and will need to spruce up his offense, but the tools are there.” Scout currently ranks Tshimanga as the 25th best center in the class of 2016.

The Competition:

Besides the Friars, other teams showing interest in Tshimanga are Boston College, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, and Baylor. Look for his offers to pick up as more programs see him during the Summer AAU Season.

The Bottom Line

One word to describe Jordy Tshimanga is upside. He is a throwback center who is a load in the low post and will not be pushed around at the college level.

Ed Cooley and the PC coaching staff has been on him early and often. Every time I have seen Tshimanga play in person and there has always been at least one member of the PC coaching staff in attendance. It is obvious that he is one of their top priorities for the 2016 class. With the transfer of freshman center Paschal Chukwu another selling point Ed Cooley can offer him is immediate playing time.

Mix-Tape Time

There are not too many mix-tapes of Tshimanga out there but here is a full game video of his MacDuffie team taking on the South Kent School:
