Friar Basketball

A Closer Look: Mamadou Diarra

Diarra

Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key PC recruiting targets. Our staff will continue to provide reports on the top Friar targets throughout the year, and offer updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Mamadou Diarra

Position: PF

School: Woodstock Academy

AAU Program: New York Jayhawks

Class: 2016

Overview:

Mamadou Diarra is one of the most underrated players in New England for the Class of 2016. A 6’8 power forward, Diarra is very athletic and runs the court well. He is an excellent rebounder and when he gets the ball inside he goes very strong to the rim for ferocious dunks. He has a good touch out to 12 feet and is developing low post moves, including a jump hook. Here is a highlight video of Diarra in action courtesy of RI Affiliated:

The PC staff has been actively recruiting Diarra and his Putnam Science teammate, 2017 guard Hamidou Diallo, for over a year and a half. They have both been to several PC games and have both been on the PC campus numerous times. Look for the Friar staff to continue to follow Diarra very closely during the spring and summer AAU season.

What Others are Saying

ESPN says that “Diarra is a true power forward that is very explosive around the rim. He power dunks drop off passes created by dribble penetration through contact. He rebounds on both ends and runs the floor extremely well. He competes and plays with great energy and urgency.” They currently rank Diarra as a four star player and the 20th best power forward in the country.
NERR says that “Diarra is an absolute beast inside the paint. He’s athletic and powerful, a high volume rebounder, and a true motor man.” They currently have Diarra ranked as the 10th best prospect in New England for the class of 2016.

The Competition Besides the Friars, Diarra is being recruited by several schools including Seton Hall, Minnesota, VCU, Temple, Kansas State, and UConn. This list will continue to grow as more programs discover just how good he is this summer when he playing with the NYC Jayhawks on the AAU circuit.

The Bottom Line Putnam Science Academy is closing at the end of the school year. The entire basketball program under head coach Tom Espinoza is moving over to Woodstock Academy. Look for the entire PC staff to make several trips there as they continue to recruit Diarra. They have been recruiting him for a while and he is exactly the type of addition the current roster needs going forward.
