KRIS DUNN TO RETURN FOR THE 2015-16 SEASON WITH

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL

PROVIDENCE, R.I.Providence College sophomore Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.) announced today (April 24) that he will return for the 2015-16 season at Providence.  Dunn had a breakout year in 2014-15.  The sophomore point guard earned a number of All-America honors, including being named Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America, NBC Sports.com Second Team All-America and CBS Sports.Com Third Team All-America.

“I am excited about next season,” Dunn said.  “I have seen this program accomplish a lot over the last three seasons and I would like to be part of some more success.  I really enjoy being around my teammates, coaches and all the friends and family I have in Friartown.  Lastly, I am looking forward to continuing my growth, improving as a basketball player and earning my diploma.”

Dunn, who recorded the second highest Friar single-season assist mark with 247 assists, earned a number of honors this season, including BIG EAST Player of the Year, BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, USBWA All-District 1 First Team and NABC District 5 First Team honors. Dunn became the first Friar ever to earn the BIG EAST Player of the Year honor and the first guard in the history of the BIG EAST to capture Player of the Year and also earn Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. Dunn led the league in assists (7.5) and steals (2.7). He ranked third in nation in assists per game and fifth in the country in steals per game. Dunn also led the league in both of those categories in conference play and became the first player in the history of the BIG EAST to accomplish that in the same season. He also averaged 15.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Dunn ranked sixth in the league in scoring and 13th in rebounding. He tied for the team lead with seven double-doubles. On January 29, Dunn became the 14th player in BIG EAST history to register a triple-double in a league game with with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists versus DePaul. Dunn was the first Friar to record a triple-double since Geoff McDermott accomplished the feat versus Harvard on Dec. 22, 2006 with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Dunn’s triple-double was the ninth in Friar history and the first for the Friars in BIG EAST play.

“Kris had a very impressive season and I believe he is the top point guard in the country,” Friar Head Coach Ed Cooley said.  “He has grown so much as person and as a basketball player.  We are excited that Kris will be part of our team next year and he will have the opportunity to earn his college degree.  His ability and leadership will be instrumental to our success.”

Dunn, who earned McDonald’s, Jordan and Parade All-America accolades as a senior in 2012 at New London High School, was ranked as the No. 2 point guard in the nation prior to attending Providence College.

The Friars finished the 2014-15 season with a 22-12 mark overall and an 11-7 record in BIG EAST play. For the second consecutive season and 17th time overall, the team was selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time since 1988-89 and 1989-90 that the team made consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Heading into next season Dunn will most likely be a first team All American and Pre Season Big East Player of the Year. He may be the best player in college basketball returning for next season.

Dunn was projected to go anywhere from 14th to 22nd in the 2015 NBA draft and by returning he may wind up in the top seven in the 2016 NBA draft.

Friarbasketball.com will have much more on Dunn’s announcement and what it means later on. In the meantime here is Kevin Farrahar’s video welcoming Kris back along with a season highlight video of Kris:
