Friar Basketball

PC’s Season Ends in Ohio

Dayton

Reaction from Providence’s 66-53 loss to Dayton on Friday night.

Sheer Disappointment: There’s a lot to delve into in this one — from technical fouls to Dayton’s takeover of the Nationwide Arena to the sloppy play of the Friars throughout the night — but more than anything this was a lost opportunity.

A year ago Providence entered the tournament as underdogs against North Carolina. They mounted a sterling comeback, turning a seven point deficit into a seven point lead with four minutes left, before falling late to Carolina’s size and the clutch shooting of Marcus Paige.

As wonderful as Cotton was a year ago, he was never better than in that final game, scoring 36 points in what was the best performance of the tournament’s first weekend. The defeat was bitter, the effort couldn’t have been faulted.

Providence left with a loss, but Cotton was every bit a champion.

One year later, the Friars looked primed to win their first NCAA Tournament game since 1997. Dayton didn’t bring the cache of Carolina, and Providence had earned a six seed thanks to a very good regular season. After PC played Villanova to a standstill in Madison Square Garden they looked ready carry momentum with them to Ohio.

That momentum was halted seconds after the opening tip.

Kris Dunn was whistled for a flagrant foul 44 seconds into the game and picked up his second two minutes later. When he returned he was welcomed with a swarming Dayton defense that converged on him when he drove and forced the ball out of his hands.

When the ball left his hands it often went to LaDontae Henton, who struggled through a 7-26 shooting performance that seemed to only worsen when the Friars needed it most in the second half. Henton has been such a critical part of Providence’s resurgence under Ed Cooley and he deserved more. He deserved to go out as Cotton had a year ago and it was hard for Friar fans to watch it end like that for him.

Ed Cooley reflected on Henton and fellow seniors Carson Desrosiers and Tyler Harris after the loss, “I’m proud of our seniors and I’m proud of LaDontae. I’m proud of Tyler, Carson. Those guys came to Providence when we were struggling with our identity. I couldn’t be more proud of our seniors to where we were some four years ago. I think you gotta look at the big picture. It’s terrible to lose this game. It’s terrible not to see these guys have a postseason win on their resume with everything else they’ve accomplished.”

Dayton Fans Take Over: I was wrong. I thought any talk of a potential homecourt advantage for Dayton in this one was being completely overblown. My perspective dramatically changed thirty minutes before tip off. Almost immediately after Oklahoma and Albany cleared the court Dayton’s fans erupted in a “Let’s Go Flyers” chant that was as loud as anything heard at the Dunkin Donuts Center this season — certainly louder than any 11 seed has ever heard from its fan base in the NCAA Tournament.

If there was surprise on press row there had to have been some measure of it from Providence’s players. The combination of that crowd and Dunn’s early departure had the Friars rattled from the jump. How rattled? They made just two field goals in the opening 11 minutes of the game and went nearly eight minutes between their second and third makes from the field.

If the crowd shook PC early, it carried Dayton home. The Flyers connected on six 3-pointers in the second half alone, as they seemingly rode the momentum of their fans once shots started dropping.

“It was like a home game. We had a great crowd again — and we needed it,” Dayton’s Jordan Sibert said. “When we had a run or made a stop, we heard it.”

The AP headline following the game read “Just Like Home: Dayton beats Providence 66-53 in tournament.”

Ed Cooley bit his tongue afterwards, refusing to take the bait when asked about playing Dayton so close to their campus “It was a neutral site. It was neutral.”

To play all season and earn a six seed only to run into that buzzsaw must have Cooley fuming — despite what he’ll admit publicly. It was every bit as loud as when Providence traveled to Omaha last year and saw Doug McDermott go off in front of 17,000 delirious fans in his final home game at Creighton.

Officiating a story: It’s rare that we delve deeply into the officiating at this site. A week ago, when Villanova’s Ryan Arcidiacono drew a questionable foul on Ben Bentil in the closing seconds of the Big East Semifinals there was no complaining from here, but the officiating on Friday night was abysmal.

It’s hard to remember the last time we’ve seen a flagrant foul called on a team’s first possession of the game, but Dunn was whistled for it early and was all but taken out of the first half with his two fouls.

What asked about Dayton’s 30 free throw attempts to his team’s seven, Cooley simply said, “Neutral site.”

And when Cooley was whistled for a technical for knocking over a chair during a timeout, Providence was all but finished. PC trailed by eight with 3:42 left when the coach was slapped with the T, and with the offense struggling as it was (they’d made one field goal over the previous six minutes) the Friars’ chances may have been slim, but they were all but dashed after the call.

Dayton scored the next six points to push their lead to 14 and it was over from there.

Cooley didn’t agree with the call, “That to me was wrong,” he said as he explained how he was trying to fire up his team for one last push.

Others didn’t agree with it either.

PC Didn’t Execute: The officiating and crowd aren’t excuses, but were factors in an otherwise dismal performance by PC. The Friars had been able to overcome adversity on the road earlier this season, coming from way back against Butler, Georgetown and Seton Hall, and when Jalen Lindsey kicked off the second half with a 3-pointer (Lindsey was terrific in making 4-8 from deep) the game was tied at 28. When Lindsey’s fourth 3 went down it was tied again at 33.

Dayton was up for the task in the second half, however, drawing Providence’s defense and kicking out for open looks after being muzzled in the first half.

A case could be made for giving Tyler Harris more minutes as the Friars failed to convert inside. Harris played just 12 minutes and took only three shots, but he grabbed four rebounds and had a steal and assist in short minutes. He’s one of PC’s best finishers near the rim, and Cooley lamented their inability to finish, but the assumption from here is that with PC so often retreating back to the 3-point line and Lindsey playing so effectively, Harris became the odd man out.

As Cooley has repeated so often this season, this team goes as Dunn and Henton go, and their two superstars were out of sync at the worst possible time. Dunn’s mid-range jump shot that had become nearly automatic was off, and Henton couldn’t find a rhythm inside or out.

That’s a wrap: Providence’s season ends with a 22-12 record and second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Friars lose three seniors, including the ultra-productive Henton. The eyes of Friartown will be on Kris Dunn this spring as he could potentially explore his professional options.

Yes the refs were terrible and yes it was clearly a road game for PC but the Friars flat out laid an egg last night. The reason they lost is because they played terrible. Embarrassing end to a great season. They folded when the lights were the brightest.

Embarrassing end to a great season. They folded when the lights were the brightest. But I still love them!! Go PC in 2015-16!! Best of luck to Ladontae, Carson, Tyler and Ted in their future! The Referees didn’t decide the outcome of the game the Pathetic basketball Coach Cooley & Company DID why do they have two seven footers on the team anyways all you guys in uniform need to go to basketball camp 101 and learn how to play the right way and maybe you will find out those games you keep losing by four points you could have actually have won by a dozen. By the way a new coach wouldn’t hurt either 😀 You guys should look from within and stop blaming OTHERS haaa…. Seth Davis the CBS Sports (anal)yst raved how they were going to get past Oklahoma what ??? These guys couldn’t play on the same floor has my kindergarten team let alone get into the field of 16. Like what Trump would say on Apprentice “Coach Cooley you are F I R E D … “

If you think Cooley is the problem you’re a jackass. The ONLY reason we are able to complain about back to back NCAA losses is because coach Cooley got us there. Without him we’re with Seton Hall and DePaul saying wait till next year.

Cooley recruited Ladaontae and Dunn 2 of the est players PC has ever had and is a great coach and those player say as much and more… Back to back 23 and 22 win season and a Conf title in his first 4 years is say hes got them on the way up…takes time to buil a program up from where it was….They played 10 o the worst minutes I’ve seen any team play last night..even so thought onto over come a 24 shot attempt diff from the line and a home crow for Dayton….and to Dayton’s credit they hit every 3 they took late in the 2nd half and thats why they won in the end..see ya back at the Dunk in October boyz!

It was sad to watch them play like that and even sadder reading some of these posts criticising the team in such derogatory fashion. They played hard all season and last night they laid an egg. I still love the school and the program but I am disappointed with last night. Coach Cooley has room for improvement on all fronts but he has gotten the program to a respectable level in the conference and nation wide. Now the wagons must get circled and we must continue to support the staff and athletes for next season. I have faith that Coach is taking this loss the hardest and will do everything in his power to come back stronger.

John C…these ppl just wanna get a rise out someone…anyone who knows bball and follows this team saw they had a real good year…had some big wins and a couple bad losses not everyone can b Duke and Kentucky…ill sat it again, Cooley had recruited 2 of best school has ever had in only 4 yrs…has great motivational and team building skills but does have room to improve in-game, that T was just a night long frustration built up and right fully so i believe…farthest from “classless” there can be as a college coach….

Jay, i have seen prob hundreds of games in my life at this point and never have i seen such a slant towards a lower seeded team in this tourney…they got hosed on the draw and top 5 player in the tourney got unfairly taken out early like u said…and with all that game is tied at 33 in 2nd half…Dayton hit 3s, we didnt, FT attempt differential was embarrasing …dont feel we for a fair shake but didnt play well enough to complain about it thats my take

Forget the refs and where the game was played, they simply just didn’t come out and play the way they should of. They got zero production out of guys like Carson and Harris. Non factors. The one thing I will disagree with is leaving Henton in. I know its crazy to say that but the way that game was going it’s a win NOW situation. Resumes mean squat in games like that and Cooley should of at least sat him down for 2-4 mins to let him regain himself and slow him down. Henton IMO disrupted any chance of the Friars being able to sustain any momentum on offense. I mean his shots weren’t even clooooooose. Which led to Dunn having to force everything and vice versa when Dunn was out in early in the first half. Give credit to Dayton tho, they sealed up those lanes and made PC very uncomfortable and always found the weak side shooter. If Dayton hit more of those open looks this game wouldn’t have been close.

This write up on last nights game couldn’t be more accurate. “Sheer disappointment” on a huge missed opportunity. Tough way to end the season. After the way PC lost to ‘Nova I thought they’d be fired up and ready to go. But too many players were off their game. Yes the refs sucked but give Dayton credit. They executed in crunch time. Finished their drives. Hit 3’s. So I fall back to the old cliche, ‘wait to next year.’ Sad to see it end this way but overall it was a pretty good ride. #GoFriars

Cooley needed to establish the inside game. We were the taller team. Where was Bentil? Carsons was always at the top of the key, what about Chuku? No inside at all. Poor coaching and it showed last night. I’m sorry folks, Cooley is not a good coach. Recruits really well. Last year Cotton carried us (literally it seems). Dunn was asked to do too much this season as well.

Bottom line I LOVE P.C. FRIARS BASKETBALL! Win, lose, or otherwise, they came out sluggish, and played horrible at the worst time. Calls by refs just added to there frustration. Once you play like that and then the calls go the other way. You are up against it BIG TIME! I also agree, never, should a team, have a home court advantage in N.C.A.A. competition!! EVER!!

Rick Pitino was a great coach as well, he just had Stars in His Eyes! Can’t blame a guy for wanting the bigger spotlight and a bigger program! It’s all about improving your own life too!

You are spot on!! We should have killed this team underneath, go inside continuously, they would have had the 31 fouls called against, not P.C.!! Worst coached game this season!

Not surprising that they lost to a team that plays zone defense. They came in unprepared and knew that was the reason they went pretty far last year. They struggled with zone defense teams all year and they should of gone for quick points and field goal ateempts rather than going for long range points, which is invalid when the team you’re playing is using zone defense….either way, they had a great season. We have a lot of rebuilding to do!

The season is over and I am very proud to be a Friar fan, they all played well and I still think that Chris Duun is NOT ready for the N.B.A. Hope to see him back next year

I fell asleep and woke up with 12:00 minutes on the clock – from 10:00 minutes on, all I kept wondering is why isn’t Tyler Harris on the court?

Teams with longer rest, most often than not, come out sluggish, then a team that is on a roll!

in all of my lifetime and I’m old really oLD Providence has always been a losing program in this tournament they always blame the referees or they are physically impaired always something if its not this it’s that or whatever always issues just a program that has all the wrong tendencies. It goes along perhaps being out there on the east just being in the wrong environment will cause mental impairment

I do believe you forgot about Rick Pitino’s final four run with P.C.!! Also, I am 62 yrs young! I had the priviledge at a very young age to meet John Tompson Sr., James Haddnot and Vinnie Ernst! At my father’s Cafe it the late 50’s early 60’s. The best point guard to ever play in collage basketball, in my humble opinion is none other than Jimmy Walker, who invented more with a ball than any other guard in the history of the game. BIG tourney back then was THE N.I.T. not N.C.A.A.! Walker scored 50 points in that Championship game and he didn’t even take a shot till almost 4 minutes into the game! P.C. since the N.C.A.A.has always had trouble recruiting top players because of the larger Collages and Univ! Not Since R.I.’s own Ed Cooley have we begun to get better players! We are on the upside, no matter what you may believe!

Also in the 70’s with Ernie D and Marvin Barnes! If Marvin doesn’t wipe his knee out, we beat Memphis, then what we all wanted to see. Walton vs Barnes!!! What a game that would have been!!

I played H.S. hoops vs Marvin back in 70 in my junior year, he was 6’5″ tall then. UNSTOPPABLE!!
