Notes and Quotes from PC Practice

Monday afternoon Ed Cooley and members of the PC basketball team met with the media prior to practice to discuss the upcoming NCAA tournament and other topics. Here are some interesting notes and quotes that I came away with from Ed Cooley, Carson Desrosiers, and Kris Dunn:

  • Ed Cooley on whether Boise State or Dayton matches up better with the Friars: “It is tough to tell. It is so early. We have been watching film the last twenty hours. Our eyes are bleeding right now, but that is the fun part of it. We are putting a game plan together for either/or. As a team we will watch them play when we get to Columbus on Wednesday night. We will grab some pizza and chicken wings and we will live scout as a group.”
  • Carson Desrosiers on PC’s exceptional length: “It has been giving some other teams fits. Our zone has been great for us this year, and that is just being long on top with myself and Paschal in the middle and long wings.”
  • Ed Cooley on his team’s length: “It has given us a lot. It has pushed people down into taking tough twos. When you force people into taking tough twos they have to shoot over extended arms. When you got Jalen and Kris at the top, and if you get past them you have got Paschal and Carson, and now here comes a physical guy like Ben, and Tyler’s arms and LaDontae’s arms are really long. It definitely helped against Villanova. That was our whole game plan to get them off the three point line and have them take tough twos.
  • Carson Desrosiers on his knee injury: “The knee is ok. I have a small brace on it and it is something I just have to keep playing through, but it has gotten better since it has happened. Our trainer, John Rock, has done a great job.”
  • Ed Cooley on taking in two transfers (Carson Desrosiers and Tyler Harris) three years ago: “I remember Mike Brey telling me this years ago. He said stay old. If you can stay old you are going to position yourself to have success. You have to stay old with good players.”
  • Kris Dunn on the help he has received from Shammgod: “He taught me everything, how to do different things on the pick and roll, how to dribble, help with my jump shot. Right now, we are just watching a lot of film. He is amazing. No one can dribble like Shammgod. I am just appreciative just to have him around.”
  • Ed Cooley on how Carson is feeling: “Better, I saw a little more pop in him the other day. We rested him the pas two days so hopefully today is one of the better days he has had this month.”
  • Ed Cooley on Kris having to sit out last year: “Kris learned a lot having to sit out last year. Cotton was a great role model for him. I think Shammgod has been a real bonus watching film with him.”
  • Kris Dunn on watching the tournament last year instead of playing in it: “It was exciting, really. It was good seeing my guys out there working as hard as they can. We came up short against North Carolina, a good program, but we went out there and battled. It was not frustrating to just watch as I had to put myself aside and just be worried about my teammates and just focus on them.”
  • Ed Cooley on the Big East Conference finally getting respect: “I think it is getting the respect it deserves but I know with a lot of media people, we are not getting a lot of love from the so called professionals so we are going to have to go out and just earn our respect. I thought we did it in the non conference schedule but I guess a lot of people don’t think we are very good.”
  • Ed Cooley on if his team is more prepared for the NCAA’s this year after having played in the tournament last year: “That is an interesting question as we really only have three guys who were on the court last year, and Carson played half the game. We have a really young group out there and have to position ourselves well in order to have success.”
  • Kris Dunn on going to the tournament this year: “Last year was enjoyable. This time it is going to be a business trip. It”s exciting as its the first time back to back for Providence College in a long while. Right now we are enjoying the moment but when we get there it is going to be a business trip.”
  • Ed Cooley on preparing when they don’t know who their opponent is: “That is a delicate balance, it is a good question. We have a game plan for Dayton, we have a game plan for Boise State.  One is a phenomenal three point shooting team like Creighton was last year and the other is ‘drive to the basket type of team’, undersized, and tough; something like Villanova was this year without the three point shooters.”
  • Ed Cooley on Carson’s toughness: “Have you stood next to him. That is one big dude. You always want more but we are so proud how far he has come.”
  • Ed Cooley on the leadership from LaDontae and Kris: “Amazing leadership from those two. Kris has been getting a lot better with his leadership the past couple of weeks, more vocal, follow his lead, demanding. I always say the best leaders don’t ask, they demand and I think he is being very demanding right now and has a sense of urgency.”
  • Kris Dunn on how this year is more meaningful after what he had to go through his first two years at PC: “It is a blessing, just going out there being with the guys. I love playing with them and being with Coach Cooley and the staff. They taught me a lot, on and off the court.”
  • Ed Cooley on Ben Bentil’s progress over the last month: “He has been a big key for us. I have seen him get better and better every five minutes. Less is more for Ben. Ben tries to do too much at times. I say to him Ben if you are open just shoot it. When your feet get down, be confident. We want to give him more confidence to shoot the ball. We need contributions from Ben, Paschal, and Jalen because we know what we are getting out of the other guys. Those three guys if they play well in post season we have a chance to advance.”
  • Ed Cooley on if PC is better prepared to win this year: “I think so, especially the three guys that were here last year. I think they will come in with a different sense of urgency. We also have a lot more depth than we did last year, when we had to play with 5-6 guys. Providence has not had a win in the tournament in a long time and I don’t want to put a lot of pressure on myself but that is the kind of success you need to have if you want to continue to build your program.”
  • Kris Dunn on being a part of PC history with back to back NCAA appearances after such a long period of time:  “It is a blessing. Providence College has had a lot of great players; Shammgod, Ryan Gomes, Bryce Cotton, Kadeem Batts, a lot of guys came out of here so just making history is amazing.”
