LaDontae Henton Nears 2,000

Henton 2000

Jimmy Walker, Ryan Gomes and Eric Murdock.

Those are the only players who have scored 2,000 points in Providence history, and the only men ahead of LaDontae Henton on the Friars’ all-time scoring list.

With 25 points against Marquette on Sunday, Henton now stands just 17 points shy of 2,000 for his career, and he surpassed Bryce Cotton (1975) for fourth in career points at Providence.

Henton also crossed the 1,000 rebound mark, meaning by week’s end he’ll join Gomes as the only Friars in history to score over 2,000 points and pull down 1,000 boards.

This is the time of year in which Henton has excelled throughout his remarkable career. He was tremendous during PC’s run through March last season:

  • 20 points and 16 rebounds in a double overtime win over Marquette
  • 21 points and seven rebounds at Creighton
  • 16 points and 11 rebounds in the Big East quarterfinals versus St. John’s
  • 26 points and 14 rebounds in the semis against Seton Hall
  • 9 points, 13 rebounds and a game-winning jumper in the Big East Championship against Creighton
  • 16 points and 11 rebounds in the NCAA Tournament versus North Carolina

Henton didn’t wait until March to take over in his senior season. He’s scored at least 22 points in five of PC’s last six games, with a pair of double doubles mixed in (25/15 vs. Marquette, 22/11 at DePaul) and nearly had a third (22/9) against Seton Hall.

Henton was at his best last season against the Hall in the Big East semis, and the Friars will need him to once again carry the load when PC travels to play the Pirates on Wednesday night.

Seton Hall returns point guard Sterling Gibbs, the league’s fourth leading scorer (16.7 ppg), who had been suspended for their previous two games after hitting Villanova point guard Ryan Arcidiacono in a blowout loss.

The Hall (16-12, 6-10) split their two games without Gibbs, falling 85-72 at St. John’s and pulling out a 67-66 victory over Creighton on Saturday afternoon.

Losers of six of their last seven, Kevin Willard’s group has issues, but they also have talent. Angel Delgado will most likely win Big East Rookie of the Year. He’s averaging just shy of a double double (9.3 ppg, 9.9 rpg), and he wasn’t even the most heralded freshman in their class.

Isaiah Whitehead was a scoring machine out of Lincoln High School in New York. The McDonald’s All American was thought to be the piece that would push this program to the next level, but he’s struggled from the field (.365) and has been blamed in some circles for igniting chemistry issues that allegedly tore the team apart and led to the transfer of guard Jaren Sina.

Divided or not, Willard does have options at his disposal. Gibbs was being talked about as the league’s Player of the Year when the Pirates were nationally ranked after defeating Villanova in January. Whitehead scored 20 the last time PC and the Hall met, and Delgado is the league’s best rebounder and a force on the offensive glass (4 o-boards per game in league play), while veteran Brandon Mobley can get hot from deep. Freshman Khadeen Carrington is difficult to contain off the bounce.

A win for the Friars (20-9, 10-6) would cement an NCAA Tournament bid that is all but a certainty at this point. With two games remaining on the schedule, Providence can lock up the second seed in the Big East Tournament with a pair of victories.
