Ricky Ledo Waived by Mavericks

Ledo Dallas

It was a tough day for Ricky Ledo, who was waived by the Dallas Mavericks to make room for Amare Stoudemire this afternoon.

Ledo was drafted 43rd overall by Dallas in the 2013 NBA Draft and appeared in 16 games for the Mavericks over the past two seasons. Ledo had two seasons remaining on his contact, but both were team options.

After a strong Summer League in 2014, some thought Ledo could crack the Mavs rotation, with Dallas assistant coach Mike Procopio saying last summer, “Right now, he’s ready to play in the NBA, where last year he wasn’t,” but Ledo’s time didn’t come this season on a deep Dallas team.

The talented Ledo has been somewhat of a divisive figure in Providence, where he grew up and eventually enrolled at Providence College before being deemed academically ineligible during his only season at PC. He declared for the draft and was taken without ever having played a college game.

From ESPN:

DALLAS — Second-year swingman Ricky Ledo will be released by the Dallas Mavericks to make room on the roster for Amar’e Stoudemire, a source said.

Ledo, the 43rd overall pick in the 2013 draft, is a developmental project who has received most of his professional playing time with the D-League Texas Legends. He scored 20 points in 16 games for the Mavs over the last two seasons.

“We talked to Ledo today and informed him that if the Stoudemire transaction goes through, that he will be waived tomorrow afternoon, just after 4 p.m,” coach Rick Carlisle said after Tuesday’s practice. “If something happens and the Stoudemire transaction doesn’t go through, then he’ll remain with the Mavericks.”

The Mavs opted to keep center Bernard James, who is on a 10-day contract, over Ledo.

He should have stayed with the Friars, could have really used him last year

Let’s hope Dunn doesn’t make the same mistake and declare too early. You would have thought Shamgod could have gotten through to Ledo!

I hope Dunn takes a look at Shamgod and Ledo and realizes another year in college is probably best for him. Easy for me to say, I’m not the one who has NBA dollars being dangled in front of him.

Ledo was not a student athlete. Point period. Dunn is. Ledo will catch on somewhere else in the D-League. He’s not a Friar in my opinion. This article doesn’t evoke any feelings or sentiment for me.

Who says he would have ever gotten the grades to play college? Maybe playing professionally overseas is the best thing for him?

People are saying he should of stayed at PC. But how could he if he was academically ineligible?? You only have a small window of opportunity.

What does this say about the Developmental League as development of young players?

Thomas Shanley and the rest of you Friar “fans” the last time I checked he enrolled in to the school and took classes just like you all did. So I thought that would have made him a Friar. Or the only way a Providence kid could become a Providence Friar is if they play basketball. Yes he did not graduate so he is not an Alumni but he went to school there and was suppose to play ball. Which is what makes him relevant. Derrick Rose played one year for his school and so did Lamar Odom and they are all synonymous with there schools. And yes we all wanted him to stay and play at PC, but he didn’t!! Who cares it was his decision. For every Mark Zuckerberg that drops out of college to create Facebook cause he thinks he figured out a way to make his fortune there are thousands that do the same thing and do not succeed. What do they do? Enroll in another school or get a job or maybe two. Either way life goes on and you live with your decisions.

He was not going to be academically eligible in his second year due to his grades so he really had no choice but to enter the draft.

Wow. So many people hating on this kid because he made a decision that he felt was best for him and his family. I wanted to watch him ball for the Friars as well, but how ridiculous would it be to be mad at someone you don’t even know, for not doing something that YOU wanted? He has actually played well in the D-League for those of you saying he is a “bust/sucks”. Guarantee he gets a spot somewhere within a week or so. Rooting for him, and shaking my head at the irrelevant judgments of others…
