Friars Sweep Hoyas

desrosiersgtown

Entering tonight’s game against Georgetown on the road, things didn’t seem like they were going to go in PC’s favor. News broke that Kris Dunn had been facing back spasms and LaDontae Henton had been dealing with several nagging injuries. Despite all of that, the Friars found a way to get a gutsy and hard fought win to complete the season sweep of Georgetown. Behind Dunn’s 12 points, 9 assists and 7 steals, the Friars grabbed a 74-71 victory, pushing them to 7-3 in Big East play.

On top of yet another great performance out of Kris Dunn, Ed Cooley received great efforts out of his two big men in Carson Desrosiers and Ben Bentil. Desrosiers finished the night with 14 points and Bentil with 16.

With 10:31 left in the second half, Dunn picked up his fourth foul, forcing Providence to sit their sophomore star for nearly seven minutes. The Friars didn’t waver. With contributions from freshman Kyron Cartwright, Junior Lomomba and Desrosiers, PC erased a 13 point Georgetown lead with 4:43 left to play.

With just under two minutes left in the game the momentum shifted back to the Hoyas.

On a questionable dead ball technical foul call, Georgetown received four free throws and the ball following a hard foul on Georgetown’s Jabril Trawick. The Hoyas converted on three of four shots from the charity stripe giving them a 1 point lead with 1:51 left in the contest.

In the remaining minute and a half, PC never made another field goal but it didn’t matter. Clutch free throws made by both Desrosiers and Bentil, the Friars held onto the lead and walked out of the Verizon Center with a win.

With the victory, PC moves to 17-6, 7-3 in conference and picked up yet another win against the RPI Top 25. A lot of credit tonight goes to PC’s role players who stepped in after Dunn was sent to the bench with four fouls.

Tonight’s victory marks the first time PC defeats Georgetown twice in the regular season in over 20 years.

Next up for the Friars will be Xavier on Saturday at 1 PM.

Refs need to be disciplined for that performance. Absolutely atrocious. Georgetown is just a bunch of unskilled goons who foul on every play. Great win!

This will be huge on selection Sunday! Talk about home court advantage. They over came every obstacle! Pat Driscol and the other two officials tried hard to dictate the outcome but PC did everything for that not to happen!! Great win for the Friars!

Great win by the Friars in an old fashioned Big East tussle! The only coach better than Ed Cooley in New England is Bill Belichick!

Tremendous work ahead with the hardest part of the schedule ahead. Team Defense must improve. Free throws, second half must be continued. At first they were causing the loss before they insured the win. Freshman must grow dramatically in the next 2 weeks. Dunn should be given every break to deal with his injuries. LaDonte needs to get fire back in his belly. Carson and Chuke are both playing much better. Harris is the deciding factor on what this team will do. Focus and effort must improve to achieve a fantastic season.
