Last week was quite a week for Providence College, and today some players were rewarded as PC athletes were named Player of the Week in both basketball and hockey.

On the basketball front, LaDontae Henton was named Big East Player of the Week after scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in an overtime win against Xavier. Here is the press release from Providence College:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced today (Jan. 26) that Providence College senior forward LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week.  In last week’s overtime win against Xavier, 69-66, Henton scored 24 points and recorded 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year.

This marks Henton’s second time as BIG EAST Player of the Week after earning recognition on Nov. 25.  It also marks the third time a Providence player earned BIG EAST Player of the Week after sophomore guard Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.) received it on Jan. 12.

Henton is leading the Friar offense and the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 21.1 points per game. He also ranks sixth in the nation in scoring. He has scored 21 or more points in 11 of the 20 games this season, including 38 versus Notre Dame (November 23), 29 versus Yale (November 28), 27 against UMass (December 20), 25 versus Miami (December 22), 35 versus Creighton (December 31), 28 against Marquette (January 3), and 24 against Xavier (January 22).

For his career he has scored 1,814 points and registered 945 rebounds. He is trying to become just the second Friar ever to score more than 2,000 points and grab over 1,000 rebounds.

The Friars game versus DePaul, which was scheduled for Tuesday, January 27 at 9:00 p.m. at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, has been postponed due to a severe winter storm. The game has TENTATIVELY been RESCHEDULED for Thursday, January 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports 1.

On the hockey front, Noel Acciari was named Hockey East Co-Player of the Week after leading the Friars to a two game sweep over UMass Lowell with two goals and three assists. Here is that press release:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior forward Noel Acciari (Johnston, R.I.) was named the Hockey East Co-Player of the Week after leading the Providence College men’s hockey team to a weekend sweep of UMass Lowell. It marks Acciari’s first career Hockey East Player of the Week award.

Acciari scored two goals and added three assists in the Friars’ two wins over the River Hawks, which was Providence’s first weekend sweep of UMass Lowell since Nov. 21-22, 2005.

In Friday night’s 7-3 win (Jan. 23), Acciari opened the scoring with a first period power-play tally. He went on to add two assists to tie a career high with three points on the night. Then in Saturday night’s 4-1 win, Acciari scored what proved to be the game winner midway through the second period as the Friars erased a 1-0 first period deficit en route to the 4-1 win.

Since returning from winter break, Acciari has 14 points in Providence’s nine games (7-7-14). He has scored a goal in each of the last four games for a career-long, four-game goal scoring streak (4-4-8)

Acciari and the Friars continue Hockey East play with the second half of their regular season series against Boston College on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Friars notched a 1-0 win in the first game of the season series on Nov. 29 at Schneider Arena.
