PC Downs Creighton 74-65

i-1

Providence defeated Creighton 74-65 before a sellout crowd of 17,640 in Omaha, Nebraska. The Friars improved their record to 14-5 (4-2 in the Big East), while Creighton falls to 9-10 (0-6 in the Big East).

Kris Dunn had another great game, leading the Friars in scoring with 21 points while also adding seven assists, eight rebounds, and two steals. LaDontae Henton chipped in with 18 points and Tyler Harris also scored in double figures for the Friars with 13.

Creighton was led by guard James Milliken with 22 points. Rick Kreklow (12 points) and Devin Brooks (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Bluejays.

After the St John’s loss on Tuesday, Ed Cooley said that the Friars needed to figure out more ways to score the ball. Mission accomplished as PC shot a respectable 48 percent from the field (24-50) while also making 43 percent from the three point line.

The Friars also needed someone step up on the offensive end aside from Dunn and Henton. Tonight PC got solid offensive contributions from Harris, Carson Desrosiers (9 points) and Jalen Lindsey (8 points).

Defensively, the Friars were led by Desrosiers who had eight rebounds to go along with six blocks. He was an intimidating presence in the paint all night long.

The Friars out-rebounded Creighton 35-25 off the glass and also committed only seven turnovers against the Bluejays.

PC is just a tough matchup for Creighton. They have no one to handle the Friars size and length on the interior and no one to match up physically with Kris Dunn on the outside.

For the Friars, getting a second Big East road victory may be one of the key points of their season. With a 4-2 Big East record they are now tied for second in the conference  behind only Villanova. The next game up is Xavier on Thursday at 7:00 pm at the Dunkin Donuts Center.
