Friars Stumble at Marquette

Henton Dunn Marquette

It was a frustrating afternoon almost from the start for Providence, which fell to 11-4 on the season after their 75-66 loss at Marquette. The Friars have struggled with Marquette since the Golden Eagles joined the Big East. They are now 2-12 against them in conference play and have never won at the Bradley Center.

Marquette stifled a Providence offense that was clicking coming into this one by dropping into a zone and daring the Friars to shoot over them. PC responded by turning the ball over 11 times in the game’s first 10 minutes and saw the game slip away after they couldn’t recover from a second-half spurt from Marquette.

This game was tied at halftime, despite Providence’s turnover woes, thanks to their outside shooting and their ability to slow Marquette’s leading scorers Matt Carlino and Luke Fischer, who combined for just two points on 1-7 shooting in the first 20 minutes.

But Providence’s defense failed them early in the second half, which led to them playing uphill for the entire second stanza. Marquette scored on six of their first seven possessions in the second half, capped by a pair of Carlino 3-pointers that gave them a 48-41 lead.

The Friars were too careless with the ball to mount enough of a comeback in this one. They cut the lead to four with roughly 2:30 remaining, and got to within four once again with just over 30 ticks left, but Marquette deserved to win this game, and they closed by making five of their final six free throw attempts to seal it.

LaDontae Henton was once against terrific offensively, scoring 28 points on 6-12 from 3-point range, but Providence’s backcourt struggled, as point guards Kris Dunn and Kyron Cartwright combined to turn the ball over 12 times, while Jalen Lindsey missed all six of his shot attempts.

Marquette had four players score in double figures, led by Juan Anderson’s 18.

Carson Desrosiers and Paschal Chukwu each blocked four shots on the afternoon. All four of Chukwu’s swaps came in the opening 20 minutes. The four blocks were a career high for the freshman.

Providence wraps up their two-game road trip on Tuesday with a difficult road test at Butler.

I had a feeling this road trip would be a loss at Marquette and a win at Butler. Hoping for a 2-1 record with the Hoyas coming to town next Saturday
