Freshmen Hitting Their Stride

LaDontae Henton and Kris Dunn may have been the leading scorers for the Friars in this afternoon’s victory against the Stony Brook Seawolves, but the biggest takeaway from the game may have been the improved play of PC’s freshmen.

At the post game press conference Cooley said, “I was really proud of the energy from the freshmen. I thought all of our freshmen played really well today. They are definitely growing up, learning what we are trying to do.”

The player of the game was probably Kyron Cartwright who finished with 10 points and 10 assists in 21 minutes of action. After the game Cartwright said, “Coach has confidence in me. You can’t be afraid to make mistakes out there. You just have to play with confidence all the time.” Cooley noted that Cartwright is further ahead than the other freshmen as he was the only one who had the experience of the Italy trip this past summer.

Here are some highlights of Cartwright in action today courtesy of FriarTV:

Ben Bentil overcame a couple of recent subpar performances and had a solid game contributing eight points and three rebounds in 13 minutes of action. Speaking about Bentil Cooley said, “Ben is going to be better when Ben has more confidence in himself. Ben is our biggest thinker right now. When he just plays he is going to be one of the better players in our league.” Bentil added, “Coach told me I am thinking a lot and he told us to just go out and play. I think my role is to rebound the ball and when I am out there I just want to do my role to help the team win.”

Jalen Lindsey was able to find his outside stroke in the second half against Stony Brook nailing two straight three point shots. He finished with eight points, three rebounds, and two steals. Lindsey said, “It was nice to hit those threes, but my teammates put me in a position where I could get the ball.” Cooley added, “We want Jalen to be a little bit more aggressive offensively. He doesn’t know how to hunt a shot yet, but he is getting there.”

Coming off his best game of the year against URI on Wednesday, Paschal Chukwu put in another solid effort against Stony Brook contributing five points and six rebounds in 14 minutes of action and was also a disruptive force on the defensive end.

Even the Friar missing freshman, Tyree Chambers, made an appearance.  Cooley said, “Tyree has been back a week. We saw some good things in practice so we were hoping we could get him in the game today. He brings shooting, toughness, a defensive mindset and physically he is definitely going to help us in our league. He is a tough kid and he is an older freshman.”

With the Big East schedule starting in a couple of weeks hopefully the five PC freshmen can build on their performances today and be ready to answer the bell when the conference season starts on New Years Eve against Creighton.
