PC Flat – Friars Lose 3rd Straight

cooleymad

Despite stretching the game’s final minute to what seemed like an eternity, PC never deserved to be in the game against the Brown Bears this evening. Ed Cooley said before tonight’s contest that he was interested in seeing how his team responded from back to back losses against Kentucky and Boston College. He got his answer. The Friars came out flat and never turned the switch on as they fell to Brown 77-67.

Four Brown players finished in double-figures with sophomore Leland King leading the Bears with 16 points. Brown sank 10 of 23 three-point shot attempts, finishing 44% from deep. Crucial in the game’s final minutes, Brown was phenomenal from the free throw line when they needed to be. For the night, Brown shot 79% from the charity stripe. Sophomore Steven Spieth was a perfect 9-9 from the line.

For PC, as the score indicated, there wasn’t much to report from the positive department. The energy level of Ed Cooley’s team was minimal at best. Poor close-outs and lazy passes came early and often. Brown forced 12 Providence turnovers on the evening, six of which belonged to Kris Dunn.

On top of Dunn’s lackluster performance, LaDontae Henton was once again extremely quiet for PC despite managing 16 points. Once fourth in the country in scoring, Henton has seemed to lose his swagger over the last three games. Dunn and Henton combined to shoot 2 for 9 from three, many of which were makable shots.

Despite opening up to a 7-2 lead, PC watched the Bears go on a 13-0 run early on in the first half. The five point lead that the Friars held in the early-going would turnout to be their largest lead in the game. At the half, the score was tied 30-30 but in the second half, Brown continued to control the tempo and outlasted the Friars. The last time the Friars held the lead was at the 15:10 mark in the second half.

With the loss, the Friars losing skid stretches to three straight. A date with in-state rival URI is set for Wednesday night, Cooley will have just one night to prepare this struggling PC team. From 6-0 to 6-3, the Friars have a lot of work to do to moving forward.

This is what happens when you start to believe in the HYPE. This team hasn’t proven anything yet! We’ve beaten one legitimate team this seAson (Notre Dame). This one was on Cooley…

Amazing turn of events. Unexplainable. Maybe we take UK off the schedule going forward? Only logical explanation is that these guys were defeated mentally by that second half and have never recovered. Need to do a better job scheduling overall, these Ivy League schools aren’t worth the trouble every year.

In the last 7 days the Big East has played 18 games and lost 4 if them. PC accounts for 2 of them against 2 terrible teams. It’s safe to say for the moment PC is the worst team in the Big East. Wake up guys! You’re better than this.

I wasn’t a fan of the frantic nature of the coaching tonight, kept trying anything to get something going but I felt he should had stuck to something and let the team get adjusted, but I like Cooley a lot and he’s much smarter than me so I’m still cool with Cooley

listen, i think hes smart too. im sure hes a great guy. BUT i wasnt impressed with him right from the beginning. he showed the same things as we saw from welsh and that other bonehead. hes got to stick with small ball. im talkin, put your tall talent under the basket and keep em there. all game. he always has tall guys sittin the bench watching. and if they use this plan, he scrubs it mid game or after half time..
ive seen them time n time again compete with Syracuse and thd Nova’s and other big teams..they can get it done in the first half, but tank in the 2nd because they rid the great basic fundemdntal basketball they were playing before. its rediculous

We almost lost to Brown last year and we won the Big East Championship and barely lost to UNC in the NCAA Tournament. All hope is not lost, but we look awful on all fronts right now and with the talent we have coaching deserves some blame. It’s a team and he’s part of it so I’m sure he’ll own that.

Defense was obviously not the best last night. Offense did not rrun the court as fast and hard as I expected. No sense of urgency. Brown made us play their game. Still PC can gel and win a lot more games. Never give IP. Go Friars!

  43. Ray Miller

    December 9, 2014 at 3:29 pm

No Cotton to carry the team to victory……like the freshman but rest of team is NOT GOOD…..see why Harris and Desrosiers transferred….no more than role players…..Henton flamed out …..Dunn cannot lead a team and cannot shoot which is bad thing for a PG nevermind his zillion turnovers every game….hoped they would be middle of BEAST like 5 or 6……but after tonite they have potential to be bottom or next to bottom….something has to change to get teams attention…..heck start the 4 freshman and Bancroft against URI ……then bring the “starters” off the bench and if they don’t show energy put the freshman and Bancroft back in…..no secret Ivy League teams not going to have athletes but shooters normally…..so give up 10+ made three pointers……where is the D….Yale is far better team than Brown but we got lucky against Yale but players believed their hype after beating Yale they could sleepwalk by Brown……hope the coaching staff gets their attention……hustle, play hard or sit……this year we have the bodies to put on floor if those on floor don’t show up.
