Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

News, notes, and opinions on PC basketball while waiting for the big game against the Wildcats tomorrow. Remember Friar fans, they have to shoot at a hoop that is 10 feet high just like PC:

  • LaDontae Henton may have been the most underrated player in the country a week ago but he isn’t anymore. After earning Big East Player of the Week and a couple of national player of the week honors the senior forward who is fourth in the country in scoring average is now very well known by those who follow college basketball.
  • I thought that one of the unsung heroes last night was Carson Desrosiers. The 7’0 center was a defensive presence in the paint all night and wound up with four blocks. He was also chiefly responsible for keeping Yale’s leading scorer, Justin Sears, in check.
  • One of the biggest reasons why PC is having so much early success this year is that they are averaging 16.5 assists per game. When you get good shots not only is your offense more powerful, you are able to get back on defense much better. Kris Dunn is 8th in the country in assists at 7.4 per game while Kryon Cartwright is 67th in the country in assists at 4.8 per game. I guess Ed Cooley knows what he is doing when he wants two ball handlers on the court at the same time.
  • If I was coaching PC tomorrow I would start 7’0 Carson Desrosiers, 7’2 Paschal Chukwu, 6’9 Tyler Harris, 6’6 LaDontae Henton, and 6’3 Kris Dunn just to get the Kentucky players thinking “hey maybe we aren’t so tall after all.” Then again, there are reasons why I am not the head coach of the PC Friars.
  • I wonder when the TV networks are going to get it in their heads that college basketball games now take longer than two hours. Scheduling games two hours apart is just plain silly when you miss the first 15 minutes of the second game. Four and 1/2 hours for two games would work just fine.
  • After seeing both Jalen Lindsey and Kris Dunn dressed for the Yale game I would be absolutely shocked if they both did not play tomorrow, particularly when their next game (against Boston College) is not until next Friday.
  • Yesterday’s game is going to look a lot more impressive in March than it does right now. I expect Yale to be a top 100 RPI team and PC’s victory will be looked on favorably by the NCAA Selection Committee. Taking care of business against the Bulldogs without Dunn and Lindsey was very important and the Friars got it done.
  • Anyone who said that Kentucky may be the greatest college basketball team ever assembled was not around during UCLA’s run during the John Wooden era. Not only did those teams have the best player in the country (Lew Alcindor and later Bill Walton) but that player was head and shoulders above any other player in college basketball. Kentucky does not have a player who gets more than 23 minutes a game, and the best player in the country plays for Duke.
  • If the NCAA Tournament was being played tomorrow the Big East would have Villanova, PC, Creighton, Georgetown, Xavier, and Butler in the tournament. If they can keep up the good work during the remainder of the non-conference schedule look for at least five Big East teams to be dancing in March.
  • A couple of years ago the BABC  had Nerlens Noel, Goodluck Okonoboh, Wayne Selden, Georges Niang, Jake Layman, and Andrew Chrabascz on the same AAU team. Michael Carter-Williams also played with many of those players on BABC. Talk about loaded!
