PC Holds Off Yale, Wins 6th Straight

The Friars just can’t seem to shake Yale.

When these two teams met last December Yale shot nearly 70% in the second half and fell two points short of an upset behind a terrific performance by then-sophomore forward Justin Sears who scored 31 points. In their previous matchup in 2010 PC prevailed by just three.

Without Kris Dunn and Jalen Lindsey (both hurt during PC’s 75-74 victory over Notre Dame on Sunday) Ed Cooley’s group once again leaned heavily on LaDontae Henton. And Henton was once again up for the challenge.

Fresh off of a weekend in which he had 24 points and 10 rebounds against Florida State and a career high 38 in the narrow win over Notre Dame, Henton carried the load for a suddenly shorthanded Friar team, scoring 29 points in a 72-66 Providence victory.

The win pushes Providence record to 6-0 with #1 Kentucky looming on Sunday.

The Wildcats may have been on the minds of Providence fans all week, but Cooley wasn’t looking past a Yale team that could challenge Harvard for the Ivy League title this season.

After being torched by Sears a season ago, Providence frustrated the junior forward, who had been averaging 17 points and nine rebounds entering the game. He fouled out after scoring just seven points and committing six turnovers.

After seeing a seven point halftime led cut to two in the opening minutes of the Friars half, Providence seemed in control of this one for a majority of the second half before Yale went on an 11-2 run in the final 1:30 to cut the lead to three at 69-66 with 21 second remaining.

Henton made a free throw on the next possession to push the lead to four, PC got a stop on the other end and it was all but over from there.

Providence got another efficient performance from Tyler Harris. Harris is scoring more on the interior earlier this season and finished with 17 points on 5-8 shooting. Harris also led the team with seven rebounds. He’s quietly shooting over 50% this season after making 43% of his shots a year ago.

Ted Bancroft (9 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block) added an early spark, connecting on a 3 pointer and finishing a traditional three point play in the first half, while freshman point guard Kyron Cartwright was steady in Dunn’s place, with eight points, seven assists and six rebounds.

14 points (on eight shots) and the leading rebounder today. One game not in double figures. Shooting over 50 percent. Not so bad……

I thought Kyron Cartwright played very well. He and Ted Bancroft came off the bench to replace injured players, and showed real intensity

First off Cartwright has started every game. Second, Cartwright is AWFUL. He is a 2 guard in a 1 guards body…He cant run the point!

He did the best he could, and they won. Given Dunn’s injury history, they had better give Cartwright even more 1guard experience.

I love when people talk shit or act like a fan when either A. They dont go to the Dunk or B. Waste money to go to the Dunk THEN SIT ON THEIR ASS THE WHOLE GAME!
