Best Scoring Games in PC History

scoringgreats

As PC fans reflect on LaDontae Henton’s 38 point performance on Sunday over Notre Dame, I took a look back at some of the greatest scoring outings in PC history (In no particular order). Could only pick ten, so there is definitely room for debate.

1) 52 – Marvin Barnes vs. Austin Peay in 1973
In a mid-December matchup with Austin Peay, Marvin Barnes led the Friars with a career high 52 points in his final season at PC. In that game, Barnes also grabbed 19 rebounds – 11 rebounds shy of his school record of 30 which he did against Assumption in February of that same year.

2) 50 – Jimmy Walker vs. Boston College in 1965
Defeating Boston College in the championship game of the Holiday Festival Tournament at Madison Square Garden, Walker put up a career high 50 points on way to winning tournament MVP. The Friars finished 22-5 that season, under Joe Mullaney.

3) 41 – Ernie DiGregorio vs. St. John’s in 1973
Sinking 19 of his shot attempts, Ernie D led the Friars to a 93-90 win over St. John’s. At the time, it was PC’s 12th win a row following the 24 point loss at UCLA.

4) 48 – Eric Murdock vs. Pittsburgh in 1991
In  a late January loss to Pittsburgh at home, Eric Murdock did all he could as he finished the night with a career high 48 points. The loss dropped Rick Barnes’ Friars to 11-7 but they wound up handing Syracuse their third loss of the season in their next game.

5) 52 – Marshon Brooks vs. Notre Dame in 2011
The season may have been a lost cause (15-17) during Keno Davis’ last year as Providence College head coach, but Marshon Brooks found a way to give PC fans something to get excited about. The then senior forward poured in 52 points on 20 of his 28 shot attempts, including 6 three-pointers.

6) 39 – Austin Croshere vs. Marquette in 1997
In the Friars opening round game of the 1997 NCAA Tournament, Austin Croshere led PC to an 81-59 romping of Marquette while scoring a career high 39 points. PC then went on to knock of Duke and Chattanooga before falling to Arizona in the Elite 8.

7) 36 – Bryce Cotton vs. North Carolina in 2014
The Friars may have lost to the Tarheels but Bryce Cotton proved to the nation that he could hang with anybody in the country on that night. Cotton’s 36 points was a career high and was just three points shy of tying Austin Croshere’s record of 39 – Most points in PC NCAA Tournament history.

8) 39 – Ernie DiGregorio vs. Rhode Island in 1973
In Ernie D’s final season in a PC uniform he dropped 39 points on in-state rival URI. That season, DiGregorio averaged 24.6 points a game while leading the Friars all the way to the Final Four.

9) 43 – John Thompson vs. Fairfield in 1963
The Friars finished 20-6 under Joe Mullaney in 1963 and John Thompson set a personal best of 43 points against Fairfield University in December of that year. That was the last season Thompson would wear a Friar uniform and he was eventually drafted in the third round of the 1964 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics.

10) 47 – Jimmy Walker vs. Holy Cross in 1967
As a senior Jimmy Walker averaged 30.6 points per game – the highest season average in PC history. In a late February matchup with Holy Cross, Walker routed the Crusaders with 47 points. Providence defeated Holy Cross that night, 88-75 in Worcester, MA.

And I think Dennis Cleary was 1-2 from the line against Brown to lock up a 76-45 win in ’96.

I understand that you could only pick 10, but the 45pts Eric Murdock hung on Arizona in the McHale Center his senior year has to be on the list somewhere. I think it’s still the most points a visitor has ever scored in that building. #emt
