PC Locks Down Binghamton in 2nd Half

Behind a 28-3 run out of the halftime break, Providence put an ugly first half behind them and pulled away for a 66-45 victory over Binghamton on Monday night. The win pushes PC’s record to 2-0 with Navy looming on Thursday night.

For the second straight game, Providence’s offense struggled. The Friars shot just 41% from the field on the night, including 0-9 from beyond the three point arc — the first time in 14 years that Providence did not connect from beyond the arc.

Ed Cooley will take the win, and had to have been pleased to see Binghamton held without a field goal for the first 13 minutes of the second half.

Also encouraging was the play of his point guards. Freshman Kyron Cartwright has proven to be the newcomer most prepared to contribute from the start, and his six point, five assist stat line undersells the calming impact he had on this offense. Cartwright threw two beautiful passes — a drive and dish to Paschal Chukwu for a layup late in the first half and a 40 foot laser to LaDontae Henton midway through the second.

Kris Dunn seemed out of sorts offensively in the first half, although he did have six points, three assists, three rebounds and four steals at the break, but for the first time this season he seemed to find his footing offensively in the final 12 minutes. Dunn finished with 10 points, seven assists, five rebounds and five steals, and most significantly, he started taking control of the offense late in this one.

Player of the Game: Dunn. On a night without an offensive standout, Dunn came up with five steals and showed flashes of being an open court mismatch when turning defense into offense.

Owning the Glass: As they should have, Providence dominated the boards in this one. They out-rebounded Binghamton 49-26 and grabbed 20 offensive rebounds. Carson Desrosiers led the Friars with 10 boards — one shy of his career high as a Friar (set against Xavier last February) while freshman Ben Bentil grabbed four offensive rebounds and six overall.

Back to the Line: After the Albany win Cooley said he’d like to see this team get to the free throw line 20-25 times. They shot 24 on Monday night, making 18. Tyler Harris made 7-8 from the stripe and freshmen big men Chukwu and Bentil each made both of their attempts. The free throw line is going to be critical for PC early in this season as they search for answers in the halfcourt.

Looking Ahead: Cooley stressed that this is a work in progress and he’s spent large portions of these first two games tinkering with different combinations and getting the feet wet of his freshmen. He shortened the rotation when the Albany game was in doubt, playing veterans LaDontae Henton and Tyler Harris 38 and 34 minutes respectively.

PC plays another tune up on Thursday night when Navy comes to town before facing a critical weekend at Mohegan Sun where they’ll face Florida State and Notre Dame.

Give Desrosiers some press 4-7 for 8pts then 10 boards, 4 blocks even an assist.
