Spurs Waive Bryce Cotton
- Updated: October 23, 2014
It was announced earlier today that former Providence College standout Bryce Cotton was waived by the San Antonio Spurs. Cotton was signed by San Antonio on July 7th after going undrafted in June.
Appearing in five preseason games for the Spurs, Cotton averaged 4.8 points and 1.4 assists in 11.3 minutes per game. While it was clear that it would be an uphill battle for Cotton to make the Spurs roster, there was a bit of hope given the announcement of Patty Mills injury in early July. Entering training camp, the entire San Antonio championship roster remained in tact, as well as the addition of first round draft pick Kyle Anderson.
In terms of next steps for the four year PC product, it remains unclear if he will be retained within the Spurs organization. San Antonio’s D-League affiliate, the Austin Spurs, could be an option for Cotton, but exploring overseas opportunities would likely make more sense financially.
While PC fans were extremely supportive of Cotton following his magical senior year at Providence, Cotton wasn’t able to prove his worth for the defending NBA champions. Knowing the track record of Bryce Cotton, however, this is not the end of the road.
Prior to signing with a Keno Davis led Friars squad, Cotton received extremely low interest from Division I schools throughout his recruitment. After arriving on PC’s campus in 2010, Cotton worked tirelessly to improve his game and by senior year wound up leading the school to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in ten seasons.
While cracking an NBA roster may look bleak today, nobody familiar with the Providence College program should count Cotton out.

Such a great player just doesn’t translate to the NBA. The NBA game is boring and predictable. Bryce will be successful in anything he does.

I live in SA but was raised near Providence. The Spurs had 15 guaranteed contracts in camp so he was an extreme long shot to make the roster. He made a good impression and is expected to play for their D League team in Austin.

He will get signed some where, the NBA is based on players who can create their own shot. That’s definitely his style of play. Size? ???? Size didn’t matter when he dropped over 30 on UNC when their team avg. 6’8″.
