News, Notes, and Opinions on Friar basketball while waiting for that exhibition game against Stonehill

  • If Midnight Madness is now all about the students and recruits, consider last Friday’s edition with Jalen Rose and Big Sean a rousing success. The students had a blast and the recruits were out in full force. Considering that the National Champions were also holding their Madness at the same time, getting the 2nd and 3rd rated players in New England in the class of 2016 (Bruce Brown and Jordy Tshimanga) and the top two players in the class of 2017 (Alex Murphy and Jermaine Samuels) was quite a coup. Throw in ESPN 2016 Top 60 Temple Gibbs and a host of other top New England players, and the evening was a rousing success.
  • Let’s see, John Calipari at Kentucky is planning on playing two teams of five players 20 minutes each during games this season. You can be sure that wasn’t in the pitch to these High School All Americans when they were being recruited by Cal. The current players are stuck, but you can bet some of them are not thrilled about it. I wonder if this is going to be a factor in future recruiting for the Wildcats.
  • It looks like the Friars out of conference schedule for next year is going to get a major boost from the preseason tournament that they will be playing in. The tentative lineup for the 2016 Wooden Legacy Tournament will include Arizona, Michigan State, Boston College, Boise State, Santa Clara, UC Irvine, and Evansville in addition to the Friars. Depending on how the Friars do, this tournament could be a huge RPI boost for PC next year.
  • LaDontae Henton was selected to the Big East Preseason Second Team by the coaches at the Big East Media Day today. Nothing like a little motivation to get LaDontae fired up for the season. Meanwhile, the Friars were picked to finish fifth which is probably at least one spot lower than they should be.
  • One of my major takeaways from last Friday’s PC media day was the poise and composure of the freshmen. This is a very special group of kids, and by the time they are through they are going to be remembered for a long time.
  • Sham classes in Afro American Studies were pushed at the University of North Carolina for 18 years. Syracuse University is facing a hearing on Level 1 or Level 2 infractions. And Ben Bentil gets tons of grief because he attended a school in Ghana for a few months? Got to love the NCAA.
  • The PC bookstore has a fresh shipment of Big East Championship hats in case you didn’t get yours after the tournament last March.

Henton deserved better. He will correct this faulty assessment of his talent.
