Star Power Coming to BE

Ellenson

It hasn’t taken Steve Wojciechowski long to prove that he’ll land players at Marquette — and the Big East continues making gains on the recruiting trail.

In the league’s first year since their break from the football schools, the recruiting results exceeded expectations. Five of the league’s ten teams had recruiting classes ranked in ESPN’s top 40 in 2014 (Georgetown 7, Seton Hall 12, Xavier 23, Providence 27, Villanova 37), while two others (Creighton and Marquette) have welcomed top 100 players this fall.

When the league was formed the hope was a core of coaches including Jay Wright, Brad Stevens, John Thompson III, Buzz Williams, Chris Mack and Ed Cooley would provide stability. While the Big East took a significant hit when Stevens left for the NBA, Wojciechowski is proving to be more than capable of bringing in talent in the wake of Williams’ departure.

Williams’ decision to head to Virginia Tech, on the heels of a subpar postseason showing by the Big East, fueled critics who believe the football conferences are the haves, while the Big East is trending toward have not status.

This is a critical time for the Big East, and the addition of Wojciechowski has been a boon on the recruiting trail.

His first early win was keeping 2014 top 100 wing Sandy Cohen in the fold after he originally committed to Williams. Wojo’s 2015 class then went from a home run to a grand slam with Thursday’s news of the commitment of top 10 recruit Henry Ellenson, who picked the Golden Eagles over Michigan State and Kentucky. The wildly skilled 6’10 power forward joins a trio of four star recruits to give Marquette ESPN’s third ranked class nationally.

Ellenson is the second five star recruit to pledge to the Big East in the past month, as Jalen Brunson, the nation’s top point guard in ’15, committed to Villanova on Sept. 10. Meanwhile, both St. John’s and Seton Hall remain in the hunt for another five star guard — Roselle Catholic’s Isaiah Briscoe.

Of course, Providence will hope to bring in another solid player this weekend as Virginia point guard Justin Robinson decides between PC, UNLV and old friend Buzz Williams and Virginia Tech.

Robinson will announce his decision on Sunday afternoon.
