Mitchell Trims Again; Moving on from Reuter, Mann

Don’t blink, Friartown.

Last Sunday night, top 2015 power forwards Alex Owens (FL) and Jarred Reuter (MA) trimmed their college choices to a handful of schools, with Providence making the cut for each.

A few days later, Donovan Mitchell, the potential centerpiece of the class of 2015, narrowed his list to ten schools. The Friars were once again included (not surprisingly, considering the amount of time they’ve dedicated to Mitchell), but so were Louisville, Kansas, North Carolina, Indiana, Villanova and more.

This weekend brought a flurry of news — none of it good for Providence until Mitchell decided to cut down his list to five on Sunday night.

Providence is in Mitchell’s final five schools, along with Boston College, Louisville, Villanova and Florida State. He’s visited PC, BC and FSU this summer, he’ll head to Villanova on Monday, and then close out this week with an official visit to Louisville.

Friar fans will hope that there isn’t a repeat of what happened with Reuter this weekend. The Massachusetts big man made a visit to Virginia and was so impressed with what he saw that he committed while on the trip. The presence of Ben Bentil (who this writer firmly believes Friar fans are going to adore) and the potential addition of Owens softens the blow of Reuter’s decision, certainly much more so than if Mitchell were to commit elsewhere, but he would have been a very solid get for Providence because of his ability to pass and rebound. His passing skills in particular would have brought a different element to the Friar frontcourt. It wouldn’t have hurt to have a friend and teammate of Mitchell’s on board either.

We also learned that 2015 guard Terance Mann came out with his list of schools and did not include the Friars. PC made a late push this summer, but the Tilton guard ultimately decided Providence wasn’t for him.

Notably, both Mann and Mitchell have included Boston College in their final lists. Jim Christian has built a formidable staff at the Heights, with Scott Spinelli making a big impact. The former Maryland assistant has strong ties to the area. He’s a Massachusetts native who played at Boston University and spent the early 90’s coaching in the NEPSAC. Spinelli was a key reason why Jake Layman and Evan Smotrycz ended up at Maryland and he’s part of a new BC staff that is making an impact in New England.

The news of the day for Providence, however, is Mitchell’s shortened list. He’d recently said that he was going to push his decision beyond September, but perhaps cutting his list twice in a week is a sign that he could announce sooner.
