Throughout the 2014-15 season, Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key Friar targets. Our staff will continue to provide reports on the top Friar targets all season and share updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Alex Owens

Position: Power Forward

School: Oak Ridge High School (FL)

AAU Program: E1T1

Class: 2015

Overview:

Friar fans got a special surprise a few days ago when ESPN Top 100 2015 power forward Alex Owens released his final five list of schools and the Friars were on it. Since then he has narrowed his list to three with PC, UCF, and Missouri making the final cut.

Although many Friar fans were aware PC was recruiting Owens they did not realize how serious Alex was about PC. He had previously committed to UCF but opened up his recruitment last December. It was thought that LSU and Tennessee were leading for him but neither school made his final cut.

At 6’8 and 240 pounds Owens is a physical specimen who possesses all the tools. He has tremendous hops for someone his size and is a very good shot blocker. He is also a beast underneath the boards and is an impressive passer for a low post front court player. Here is just a small sample of what Alex can do:

What Others are Saying

ESPN says that Owens is a wide body who carves out space to get his position in the paint and plays in full attack mode especially when it comes to rebounding. Rebounding inside his space and moving to go get the ball is his calling card as he can be a high level rebounder. A surprisingly quick jumper for his size with mobility and nimble foot work as he is quick to the ball. His hands are magnetic by the rim with the ability to finish a drop off pass or be the recipient of the high-low pass. A shot blocker both on his man and coming over from the weak side on the defensive end to protect the basket, and a powerful finisher inside the paint with a nice elbow/foul line area jumper to compliment his inside presence. His passing skills are impressive as he is a willing passer with vision and accuracy. They currently have Alex ranked 95th in the class of 2015.

SCOUT says that Owens is a very undersized, 6-7 center but didn’t appear to realize that fact, as he goes to battle like he’s a seven-footer. Owens plays big and has the body to reinforce the powerful attitude, resulting in numerous rebounds and overall physical post play. Not only that, he’s an excellent — if overly reliant — interior passer capable of sizzle and flash as an assists-man. They have Alex ranked 96th in the 2015 class.

Rivals says that Owens is an animal on the glass, doesn’t mind contact and has the game to develop into a pretty reliable scorer as well. They currently have him ranked 108th in the 2015 class.

The Competition:
The other two schools in contention for Owens are Missouri an UCF. The competition will be fierce as UCF is his hometown school and Missouri is heavily involved with Owens high school and AAU teammate Antonio Blakeney.

Bottom Line:
Alex Owens would be a perfect complement to a future Friar front court that would include Paschal Chukwu, Ben Bentil, and Jalen Lindsey. The PC staff has made terrific strides in Owens recruitment since he de-committed from UCF and hopefully Ed Cooley and company can close the deal with this very impressive and important recruit.
