Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

Here are some random thoughts about the Friars and other basketball related topics while wondering when it was that I lost interest in MLB All Star Game.

  • The July Live Period is the time when we find out who the recruits are that the Friars are seriously interested in, and and which recruits they may have had some interest in, but have since moved on. The first example of solidifying interest in a player this July is Jarred Reuter. Jarred has stated that the PC staff has had a representative at all of his events in July and the Friars are one of the schools recruiting him the hardest. With his big body and low post moves underneath the basket, Jarred would be a perfect fit in a future Friar frontcourt with Paschal Chukwu and Ben Bentil.
  • Ed Cooley needs to get on the next plane to Las Vegas and start yelling at Bryce Cotton to SHOOT THE BALL! Through three games Bryce seems to be bending over backwards trying to show he is a fundamentally sound pass first point guard at the expense of showing what he can really do. Meanwhile, the rest of his team has no problem chucking it up at every opportunity.
  • Don’t look now but, Ricky Ledo really looks like he has improved his overall game since last year. His last game in particular, where he scored 18 points and had five assists, was very impressive. It will be interesting to see if he sticks with the Mavs and gets some meaningful minutes this year.
  • Wednesday marks the start of a very big week in the July Live Period highlighted by the Nike Peach Jam in South Carolina which will determine the EYBL champions. Other tournaments this week include the UA Finals in Atlanta and Las Vegas Live.
  • A couple of weeks ago, at the taping of the Ed Cooley radio show, Ed mentioned that he was going to be actively recruiting some of the players he coached for the U18 National Team. Last week Kevin McNamara was wondering if Coach Cooley’s experience with USA Basketball could help with recruiting. Call me silly but I am going to pay attention to where the uncommitted players from the U18 team are playing the next couple of weeks and see if Ed Cooley is following them. The national recruiting services don’t always know everything.
  • After watching Marshon Brooks play the past few days in the Las Vegas Summer League I have to believe that there is another NBA team out there that will give him another chance. His defense can’t be that bad, can it? Sometimes you get the rep for bad defense and it is hard to shake. If he does not get another shot he is still going to make some very good money in Europe.
  • Speaking of making money, I have to think Kadeem Batts really helped himself with his performance in the Orlando Summer League. The NBA may still be a long shot but he will be making good money somewhere this season. For the latest on Kadeem check out Craig Belhumeur’s latest interview.
