July Live Period is Here

July may be the most critical month on the recruiting calendar. Despite a wide variety of AAU events throughout the spring, Division I coaches are limited to two live periods in the spring that last just 48 hours each (“live” meaning they can evaluate players, but there can be no contact between coaches and recruits).

July brings three consecutive “live” periods that last from Wednesday to Sunday each week. The July live period kicks off on Wednesday, July 9 at 5 p.m., meaning there will be an explosion of news, tournaments and prospects playing themselves in and out of scholarships.

What the July period means for Friar fans is clarity.

Since taking over at PC in 2011, Ed Cooley and his staff have followed a similar recruiting pattern: zeroing in on a smaller number of targets than the competition, and tracking these prospects hard throughout July. We already have a strong sense of who Cooley and Co. have kept an eye on to date, but there will be no doubt by month’s end.

Cooley’s staff secured a commitment from Jalen Lindsey during the first week of the live period a year ago, but a word of caution: his July commitment was an exception for Cooley at PC. We’ll get a stronger sense of who is at the top of their list, but commitments can take time.

In 2011, Kris Dunn committed to PC in late-August and Ricky Ledo followed two weeks later (Josh Fortune had verballed under Keno Davis a year prior).

Providence didn’t get their first commit in 2012 until October, when Rodney Bullock popped for PC; and after Lindsey verballed last year, Paschal Chukwu committed in late-August with Ben Bentil doing so on October 1.

Enough of the history lesson.

July is going to be chaotic, with events taking place in Philadelphia, Chicago, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, South Carolina and everywhere in-between.

Throughout this month our goal is to provide updates on the latest targets, but also share our perspective on how these recruits could potentially fit in Cooley’s system. With so many of PC’s recruits playing in the New England prep ranks, we’ve seen most recruits on multiple occasions and at different environments: AAU games, camps, high school games and playoffs.

Here is a look at where some of Providence’s recruits will be this week:

  • Bruce Brown (MA), Terrell Brown (MA), 2015 PC commit Ryan Fazekas, Justin Robinson (VA), and Jared Wilson-Frame (CT) will be at the Ty Lawson & Victor Oladipo All American camp July 9-11.
  • Curtis Cobb and Makai Ashton-Langford (both MA) are scheduled for this week’s Adidas Camp in Chicago.
  • The Breakout Camp in Philadelphia will feature NE Playaz forwards Tomas Murphy (RI) and Jarred Reuter (MA). Connecticut power forward Steve Enoch will be there as well.
  • Donovan Mitchell will also be at the Breakout Classic with his AAU team, The City.
  • Malik Beasley (GA) is in Vegas for the Lebron James Skills Academy, as is Tilton guard Terance Mann (MA), who will play at the Peach Jam with BABC later this month.
  • Fazekas is also slated for the Chicago Summer Jam (after the Lawson/Oladipo camp), as is Chicago native Myles Carter and PC target Alex Illikainen.
