Recruiting Rankings: July 3

PrinceAli

Every week Craig Leighton and Kevin Farrahar will post their PC-specific recruiting power rankings, listing their top eight Friar targets. Unlike national rankings, we will rank players based on not only upside, but the fit at Providence, the need, and the likelihood of these prospects ending up at PC.

Kevin Farrahar’s Elite 8 for July 3, 2014:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy, 6’3 SG, class of 2015: Mitchell visited both Providence and Boston College this week. His rep continues to grow with every new AAU appearance. Friar fans will hold their breath through each visit he takes.

2. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy, 6’6 SF, class of 2016: Watch Blackwell at the NBA Top 100 camp here: http://wp.me/p45agC-5X8

3. Terance Mann, Tilton School, 6’5 SG/SF, class of 2015: You won’t find many bigger fans of Mann than this writer. He was scheduled to visit Providence this week, but had to reschedule due to travel conflicts. His outside shot needs some work, but I have a hunch that he’s going to explode in his third year at Tilton. Would make for a terrific addition to the class of ’15.

4. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School, 6’5 SF, class of 2017: Samuels was one of the stars at the Stars of Tomorrow camp at Brandies University this week. Mann’s debut on the list bumps him down — only a spot — because of the immediate need for backcourt help.

5. Alex Illikainen, Grand Rapids (MN), 6’9 PF, class of 2015: Richard Pitino needs to lighten up on the old alma mater. Illikainen was on Minnesota’s campus once again this week.

6. Jarred Reuter, 6’8 PF, Brewster Academy, class of 2015: Reuter’s recruitment will be one of the most interesting in New England this summer and fall. He doesn’t possess the above-the-rim athleticism that coaches fall for this time of year, but he’s a dirty work big man who can really pass. How well he will rebound and defend at the next level may determine how high he goes. Seen interest all over the board this spring, including Pitt, Kansas State, Providence, Illinois and, more recently, Creighton.

7. Steven Enoch, Norwalk High School, 6’9 PF, class of 2015: The Providence/Enoch buzz doesn’t feel nearly as loud as the Enoch/UConn talk that seems to be circulating. It’s early and there are a lot of chips left to fall, however.

8. Tomas Murphy, 6’9 PF, Northfield Mount Hermon, class of 2017: Few New England prospects have Murphy’s upside. Dying to see how he performs alongside Aaron Falzon, Josh Sharma and Daquon Ervin next season at Northfield Mount Hermon.

Craig Leighton’s Elite 8 for July 3, 2014:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy, 6’3 SG, class of 2015: Donovan has indicated that he is not going to make a decision until after September, so its looks like the Friar staff will be making several trips up to Brewster Academy this fall to continue the full court press on his recruitment.

2. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy, 6’6 SF, class of 2016: Braxton, who is the Friars number one recruit in the class of 2016, will be playing with the Atlanta Celtics on the  Adidas Circuit when the July Live Period for recruiting starts next week.

3. Alex Illikainen, Grand Rapids (MN), 6’9 PF, class of 2015: Alex is one of PC’s top recruits for 2015 and has continued to say that the Friars are one of the schools recruiting him the hardest. Look for him to possibly crack many Top 50 lists by the end of the July Live period.

4. Terance Mann, The Tilton School, 6’6 SF, class of 2015: Terance is one of the top players in New England who, until recently, did not seem to have any interest in Providence College. It looks like this has changed and Terance will be visiting the PC campus in early August. He would be a great addition to the 2015 class for the Friars.

5. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School, class of 2017: Jermaine will be running with Expressions Elite during July. The next step for the Friars would be to get him on campus for a visit in August, possibly during PC’s Elite Camp.

6. Steven Enoch, Norwalk High School, 6’9 PF, class of 2015: Steve recently visited the PC campus, but UConn probably still leads for his recruitment. Look for him to continue to shoot up the Top 100 lists during the July Live Period.

7. Tomas Murphy, 6’9 PF, Northfield Mount Hermon, class of 2017: Tomas will be running with the New England Playaz during the July live period. Expect the PC staff to monitor the Playaz very closely during July, and I would assume that Tomas will be at the PC Elite Camp in August.

8. Prince Ali, 6’8 PF, The Sagemont School (FL), class of 2015: Prince, who recently de-committed from UConn, has said that he is now being recruited hard by Providence. He is currently ranked 45th in ESPN’s top 100 for the 2015 class.

Others to Watch:

Ricky Council, Northern High School (NC), 6’4 SG, class of 2014

Jarred Reuter, Brewster Academy, 6’8 PF, class of 2015

Armel Potter, Kennesaw (GA), 6’1 PG, class of 2014

Naadir Tharpe, Kansas, 6’0 PG, transfer (eligible in 2014 and 2015)

Montaque Gill-Caesar, 6’6 SF, Huntington Prep, class pf 2015

Malik Beasley, 6’4 SG, St. Francis (GA), class of 2015
