Recruiting Rankings: June 29

Every week Craig Leighton and Kevin Farrahar will post their PC-specific recruiting power rankings, listing their top eight Friar targets. Unlike national rankings, we will rank players based on not only upside, but the fit at Providence, the need, and the likelihood of these prospects ending up at PC.

Kevin Farrahar’s Elite 8 for June 29, 2014:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy, 6’3 SG, class of 2015: It’s a busy weekend for Mitchell, who is visiting both Providence and Boston College. Both the Eagles and Friars are all in, as Mitchell continues a tour that has taken him up and down the Eastern seaboard.

2. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy, 6’6 SF, class of 2016: Does Providence get a visit this summer? PC was one of a handful of schools Blackwell said he wanted to see over the summer when asked last month. Indiana is making a big push.

3. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School, 6’5 SF, class of 2017: Just how high is Samuels’ ceiling? The New England Recruiting Report (NERR) ranks him 10th across the 2014-17 classes in the region, between UCLA bound Jonah Bolden and 2015 Syracuse commit Tyler Lydon.

4. Alex Illikainen, Grand Rapids (MN), 6’9 PF, class of 2015: His rep continues to grow. Widely regarded as one of the more unheralded and underrated prospects at the NBPA Top 100 camp.

5. Steven Enoch, Norwalk High School, 6’9 PF, class of 2015: Like Mitchell, Enoch is visiting Providence over the weekend. And like Mitchell, he’s in the midst of a summer packed with visits: UConn Thursday. PC, BC and URI over the weekend, with Seton Hall coming on Monday.

6. Jarred Reuter, 6’8 PF, Brewster Academy, class of 2015: Reuter was ranked a spot ahead of Enoch in NERR’s Elite 75 rankings (29th). Enoch has the buzz of a late bloomer, while Reuter has been a constant on the New England prep and AAU circuit for the past 2-3 years.

7.  Curtis Cobb, 6’4 SG, Wilbraham & Monson, class of 2015: Cobb is back on my list after a few weeks away. Not sure where PC stands in regards to him, but he’d make sense on a number of levels: he can score, he’s local (Fall River, MA) and with a hard push Cobb seems like the type of top 125-150 player the Friars could land and groom into a four year contributor and multi-year starter. Guard depth been a constant issue and here’s a solid local one.

8. Tomas Murphy, 6’9 PF, Northfield Mount Hermon, class of 2017: It will be interesting to see how far Ed Cooley and his staff will go to invest in Murphy early. NERR has him ranked 2nd across all classes in New England (ahead of 2015 guard Jalen Adams who just received an offer from Louisville) and both of his brothers committed to all-time coaches.

Craig Leighton’s Elite 8 for June 19th, 2014:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy, 6’3 SG, class of 2015: Donovan said he had a great visit to Providence this past Friday. He is picking up new interest from more high majors this week. Although Donovan said he may not be ready to make a final decision on which college he will attend in September, I still expect the Friars to be in it right to the end.

2. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy, 6’6 SF, class of 2016: Braxton said once again this week that  one of the schools he really wants to visit this summer is Providence College. Getting Braxton on campus will be a huge plus for the Friars as they go head to head against some of the top programs in the country for his services.

3. Alex Illikainen, Grand Rapids (MN), 6’9 PF, class of 2015: Alex is a secret no more as he is on just about everyone’s Top 100 lists. Look for his stock to continue to rise when he and his Howard Pulley team travel down to the Peach Jam in a couple of weeks to compete in the Nike EYBL Championships.

4. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School, class of 2017: NERR recently ranked Jermaine as the 10th best prospect in New England, regardless of class, ahead of elite players such as Tyler Lydon, Devonte Graham, and many others. He should be a key recruit for the Friars in the 2017 class.

5. Steven Enoch, Norwalk High School, 6’9 PF, class of 2015: The good news is that Steve was on campus for a visit with the Friar staff on Saturday. The bad news is that Connecticut may be the team to beat for the Norwalk native.

6. Tomas Murphy, 6’9 PF, Northfield Mount Hermon, class of 2017: Tomas bursts into my elite eight rankings after the New England Recruting Report ranked him as the second best player in New England, regardless of class. WOW!  Tomas recently announced that he will attend Northfield Mount Hermon for his sophomore year.

7. Armel Potter, Kennesaw (GA), 6’1 PG, class of 2014: With the announcement by Tremaine Isabell that he will be attending Missouri next season, Armel may be the next player the Friars turn to in order to fill a scholarship for the 2014 class. The question is will the Friars add another player for this season?

8. Jarred Reuter, 6’8 PF, Brewster Academy, class of 2015: Jarred returns to my Elite Eight rankings after having a very solid spring season with the New England Playaz. He joins Donovan Mitchell and Alex Illiakainen on what will be another powerhouse Brewster team.
