Cotton’s Top Ten Games #4: 50 Great Minutes vs. Nova
- Updated: June 2, 2014
Game: February 18 at home against #9 Villanova.
A Look Back: This was it. Desperate for a signature win to bump a sagging RPI, Providence welcomed #9 Villanova to the Dunkin Donuts Center and a thriller ensued.
Nova had humiliated the Friars a month earlier — winning by 30 and sending PC to an 0-2 start in Big East play — and seemed to be a horrible matchup for a Providence team lacking in ball handlers. Fending off 90 feet of pressure fell squarely on Cotton’s shoulders, and he did so effectively through 40 minutes of regulation and then a pair of overtime sessions.
This may not have been Cotton’s most efficient shooting night from the field (6-20), but he turned the ball over just three times in 50 minutes while scoring 22 points, handing out nine assists and snatching seven rebounds.
The game also featured three of Cotton’s greatest highlights of the season:
1. Midway through the second half, he crossed Ryan Arcidiacono to the ground to cut a four point Nova lead to one.
2. Down three with 25 seconds left in the second overtime he knocked down a 3 from the top of the key to tie the game once again.
3. Trailing 72-70 in the final minute of overtime, Cotton soared to finish this reverse layup to tie it.
After two overtimes, Providence ultimately fell in one of the wildest nights the Dunk has seen in years, but Cotton was once again magnificent.
