Friar Basketball

Recruiting Rankings: May 29

Tharpe

Every week Craig Leighton and Kevin Farrahar will post their PC-specific recruiting power rankings, listing their top eight Friar targets. Unlike national rankings, we will rank players based on not only upside, but the fit at Providence, the need, and the likelihood of these prospects ending up at PC.

Kevin Farrahar’s Elite 8 for May 29, 2014:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy, class of 2015: Mitchell is looking to make his college decision in September. Kansas and Louisville have begun sniffing around. Will Cooley’s early work pay off once again?

2. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy, class of 2016: Blackwell is averaging double figures at the Adidas Gauntlet playing for a very talented and deep Atlanta Celtics squad.

3. Antoine Mason, Niagara University, Transfer (eligible immediately): Bumping Mason up a spot in lieu of the recent news of Josh Fortune’s transfer. PC can’t possibly have another thin backcourt… can they? Jon Rothstein’s report that Mason has trimmed a list of 14 down to PC, BC and Auburn was refuted by Adam Zagoria.

4. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School, class of 2017: Word is starting to get out on Samuels, a freshman who held his own at the EYBL last weekend. His best game of the weekend was an 11 point, 7 rebound effort.

5. Jalen Adams, Cushing Academy, class of 2015: Adams set a record at the Adidas Gauntlet scoring 30+ points in four games. Sat out last weekend due to finals.

6. Miles Bridges, Huntington Prep, class of 2016: A stat stuffer at the EYBL, few have been as productive on the Nike circuit. He’s been scoring, rebounding and blocking shots at a high rate. Marquette the latest to offer.

7. Tramaine Isabell, Garfield High School, class of 2014: Another late 2014 possibility? Isabell tweeted that he’s down to Providence and Missouri. Would be a solid get at this stage.

8. Bruce Brown, Vermont Academy, class of 2016: Another week, another 20 point EYBL performance for Brown. This time it came against Texas Elite.

Craig Leighton’s Elite 8 for May 29, 2014:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy, class of 2015: Donovan remains the Friars number one target for the 2015 class. Other schools have been contacting him, but the Friars will be on his list right to the end.

2. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy, class of 2016: Blackwell had a couple of solid games for the Atlanta Celtics on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit last weekend and continues to establish himself as possibly one of the top prospects nationally in the 2016 class. Credit goes to Cooley and the PC staff for establishing a relationship very early with Braxton.

3. Antoine Mason, Niagara University, Transfer (eligible immediately): Some reports are showing that Antoine is down to PC, BC, and Auburn. Other reports are saying that he has not narrowed down his list of schools. The Friars can really use this fifth year senior who can immediately replace some of the offense that either graduated or transferred this past season.

4. Jalen Adams, Cushing Academy, class of 2015: Jalen did not play on the Adidas circuit last weekend as he was finishing up his school work for the year. He remains one of the top point guards in the 2015 class and a recruiting priority for several high major programs.

5. Tramaine Isabell, Garfield High School, class of 2014: The 6’1 point guard has narrowed down his list of schools to PC and Missouri. The addition of Isabel to the 2014 class will add much needed backcourt depth for the Friars and another guard who can play the point. Keep an eye out as his decision could come soon.

6. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School, class of 2017: Jermaine has played with Expressions 17 and under team the last two weekends on the EYBL circuit and has not missed a beat. The class of 2017 prospect is going to wind up being a special player by the time he is a senior in high school.

7. Alex Illikainen, Grand Rapids (MN), class of 2015: I watched Alex play a couple of times for his Howard Pulley AAU team the past two weekends and came way very impressed. Howard Pulley plays a very team oriented offense and Alex fits in very nicely with this style. He has an excellent outside shooting touch and very good passing ability. The highlight last weekend for Alex was an impressive 23 point performance on 9/14 shooting against a very good E1T1 team.

8. Naadir Tharpe, Kansas, transfer (eligible in 2014 and 2015): Despite some reports that PC is not interested, Tharpe’s name keeps coming up in relation to the Friars. The 5’11 point guard would fit in nicely to the Friars rotation if he obtains a wavier to play this season and is immediately eligible.
