Recruiting Rankings for May 22

AntoineMason

Every week Craig Leighton and Kevin Farrahar will post their PC-specific recruiting power rankings, listing their top eight Friar targets. Unlike national rankings, we will rank players based on not only upside, but the fit at Providence, the need, and the likelihood of these prospects ending up at PC.

Kevin Farrahar’s Elite 8 for May 22, 2014:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy, class of 2015: Mitchell remains atop my list for the third week running. Playing a bit under the radar on the Under Armor Circuit while Nike’s EYBL and Adidas’ Gauntlet caught the headlines last week.

2. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy, class of 2016: Cooley and his staff are known for zeroing in early and going all in. Does Jalen Lindsey’s former teammate get the same treatment that Jalen did two years ago? Would be an upset to many nationally, but few figured Lindsey would end up in Providence prior to his junior year.

3. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School, class of 2017: Watch him and you’d have no idea the 6’6 forward is just a freshman. So skilled and talented.

4. Antoine Mason, Niagara University, Transfer (eligible immediately): My first change in the rankings this week, Mason can fill it up. He lit up some of PC’s opponents from last season: 34 versus Seton Hall, 39 on Brown and 38 more against Marist at season’s end. Lives at the free throw line. Ideal one year rental for a team looking to fill a scoring void.

5. Jalen Adams, Cushing Academy, class of 2015: There isn’t much anyone has been able to do to slow him this spring. In 14 months he’s gone from a blip on the national radar to full fledged star. He’s been better than Cushing teammate Kaleb Joseph for a year now and Joseph may start at Syracuse as a freshman.

6. Miles Bridges, Huntington Prep, class of 2016: Bridges has been one of the most productive players at the EYBL all season. That didn’t stop last weekend. His 17/15 game was among the best in Hampton.

7. Bruce Brown, Vermont Academy, class of 2016: An outburst in Hampton was surrounded by a few average games last weekend. Been a sleeper for too long. That won’t last.

8. Jarred Reuter, Brewster Academy, class of 2015: Questions about his athleticism and conditioning will linger until he proves it at the collegiate level. The thought from here is that he and Ben Bentil would be a good pair of bangers to play alongside the slender Paschal Chukwu.

Craig Leighton’s Elite 8 for May 22, 2014:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy, class of 2015: Donovan’s AAU team, the City, went 2-2 on the Under Armor Circuit last weekend. The Friars number one target in 2015 is averaging 12.7 points per game this spring.

2. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy, class of 2016: Blackwell had another solid weekend for the Atlanta Celtics and may very well wind up being the Friars top recruiting target in the 2016 class.

3. Jalen Adams, Cushing Academy, class of 2015: Jalen had an incredible weekend averaging over 29 points a game on the Adidas circuit last weekend. He is quickly emerging as one of the top two or three point guards in the 2015 class.

4. Antoine Mason, Niagara University, Transfer (eligible immediately): Antoine was the second leading scorer in Division I last season, averaging over 26 points per game. Having just been granted his release by Niagara, there seems to already be mutual interest on both sides between the Friars and the 6’3 shooting guard.

5. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School, class of 2017: Samuels has moved up to play with the 17u team for Expressions the last couple of weeks and has not missed a beat. Jermaine will be a top priority in the 2017 class.

6. Alex Illikainen, Grand Rapids (MN), class of 2015: Having recently been offered by Providence Alex is having a very good spring AAU season on a very good Howard Pulley team on the Nike EYBL circuit. Through 11 games the 6’10 big man is averaging 10.1 points and is shooting .474 from the three point line. Alex’s sister Molly is a junior forward on the PC Women’s Ice Hockey team and was on the US National Under 18 team.

7. Jarred Reuter, Brewster Academy, class of 2015: Jarred remains one of the Friars top targets for the 2015 class and has the type of big body that the Friars will need on their roster going forward.

8. Tremaine Isabel, Garfield High School, class of 2014: The 6’1 point guard was recently granted a release from his LOI from Washington State and has expressed an interest in playing for the Friars. One of the top point guards still available, he may have some work to do academically in order to qualify.
