Cotton’s Top Ten Games: #9 Torching Marist

Friarbasketball.com takes a look back at the top ten games of Bryce Cotton’s senior season.

Game: November 16 versus Marist.

A look back: There’s only one game on this list that came against a non-high major opponent, but Cotton was so dominant on this afternoon that it must be included. His performance was significant at the time, as Cotton showed strong signs that he’d successfully adjust to the new role he’d been thrust into.

Providence opened the season with an overtime win against Boston College in which Cotton was terrific in scoring 28 points, and they’d just squeaked out a win in their second versus Brown — Cotton’s worst game of the season (although he did finish with 9 assists). That wouldn’t be the case in their third game, as the Friars rolled an overwhelmed Marist squad, 93-48, with Cotton matching his then-season high 28 points.

In just 29 minutes (his lowest total of the season) Cotton made all 11 of his free throws, dished out 11 assists, grabbed five boards and came up with three steals, while turning the ball over just once. The 11 assists were a career high for Cotton, who led the Big East in scoring at shooting guard as a junior, but answered early questions about his ability to  effectively distribute and score after playing point guard for the first time in his college career due to Kris Dunn’s shoulder injury.

The margin of victory was the biggest for the Friars since February 2001, and PC went on to win their first six games before falling to Maryland in the Paradise Jam finals.

Cotton provided one of best highlights of his career in the second half.
